Die 15 Novembris 2025.

S. Gertrudis Virginis.

Duplex Minus.

Amen.
Dómine in unióne illíus divínæ intentiónis, qua ipse in terris laudes Deo persolvísti, has tibi Horas persólvo.

O Lord, open Thou my mouth that I may bless Thy Holy Name. Cleanse my heart from all vain, evil, and wandering thoughts; enlighten my understanding; kindle my affections, that I may pray to, and praise Thee with attention and devotion; and may worthily be heard before the presence of Thy Divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, in union with that Divine Intention wherewith Thou didst Thyself praise God, while as Thou wast on earth, I offer these Hours unto Thee.

Ad Matutinum.

Dicuntur secreto.

Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Ave María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum: benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Sancta María, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatóribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Credo in Spíritum sanctum, sanctam Ecclésiam cathólicam, sanctórum communiónem, remissiónem peccatórum, carnis resurrectiónem, vitam ætérnam. Amen.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell: the third day He rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body. And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Deinde clara voce:

℣. Dómine, †︎ lábia mea apéries.
℟. Et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.

℣. O Lord, open Thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

℣. Deus ✠ in adjutórium meum inténde.
℟. Dómine ad adjuvándum me festína.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen. Allelúja.

℣. Make haste, ✠ O God, to deliver me.
℟. Make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia.

Invitatorium.

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Psalmus 94.

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo salutári nostro: præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the God of our Salvation: let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam, quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods: for the Lord will not cast off His people: for in His hand are all the ends of the earth; and the heights of the hills are His also.

Veníte adorémus.

O Come, let us worship Him!

For the sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land: O come, let us worship and fall down; let us cry unto the Lord our Maker. For He is the Lord our God; and we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Hódie si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto: ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea.

To-day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your heart; as in in the Provocation, and as in the day of Temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works.

Veníte adorémus.

O Come, let us worship Him!

Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi, Semper hi errant corde: ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas, quibus jurávi in ira mea, si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Forty years long was I grieved with that generation and said, It is a people that do alway err in their heart, and they have not known My ways: unto whom I sware in My wrath that they should not enter into My rest.

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Veníte adorémus.

O Come, let us worship Him!

Regem Vírginum Dóminum, * Veníte adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Virgins: * O Come, let us worship Him!

Nocturnus I.

O how lovely and glorious * is the generation of the chaste!

Psalmus 8.

Amen.

O Lord our Lord, * how admirable is thy name in the whole earth!
2 For thy magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
3 Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise, because of thy enemies, * that thou mayst destroy the enemy and the avenger.
4 For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers: * the moon and the stars which thou hast founded.
5 What is man that thou art mindful of him? * or the son of man that thou visitest him?
6 Thou hast made him a little less than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour: * And hast set him over the works of thy hands.
7 Thou hast subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen: moreover the beasts also of the fields.
8 The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, * that pass through the paths of the sea.
9 O Lord our Lord, * how admirable is thy name in all the earth!
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

O how lovely and glorious is the generation of the chaste!

Ante torum * hujus Vírginis frequentáte nobis dúlcia cántica drámatis.

Before the bed * of this maiden, sing for us again and again the tender idylls of the play.

Psalmus 18.

10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * judícia Dómini vera, justificáta in semetípsa.
11 Desiderabília super aurum et lápidem pretiósum multum: * et dulcióra super mel et favum.
12 Etenim servus tuus custódit ea, * in custodiéndis illis retribútio multa.
Amen.

The heavens shew forth the glory of God, * and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.
2 Day to day uttereth speech, * and night to night sheweth knowledge.
3 There are no speeches nor languages, * where their voices are not heard.
4 Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth: * and their words unto the ends of the world.
5 He hath set his tabernacle in the sun: * and he, as a bridegroom coming out of his bride chamber,
6 Hath rejoiced as a giant to run the way: * His going out is from the end of heaven,
7 And his circuit even to the end thereof: * and there is no one that can hide himself from his heat.
8 The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
9 The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: * the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
11 More to be desired than gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
12 For thy servant keepeth them, * and in keeping them there is a great reward.
13 Who can understand sins? from my secret ones cleanse me, O Lord: * And from those of others spare thy servant.
14 If they shall have no dominion over me, then shall I be without spot: * and I shall be cleansed from the greatest sin.
15 And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: * and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight.
16 O Lord, my helper, * and my redeemer.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Ante torum hujus Vírginis frequentáte nobis dúlcia cántica drámatis.

Before the bed of this maiden, sing for us again and again the tender idylls of the play.

Revértere, * revértere Sunamítis: revértere, revértere, ut intueámur te.

Return, return, * O Shulammith! Return, return, that we may look upon thee.

Psalmus 23.

3 Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini?
5 Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino: * et misericórdiam a Deo salutári suo.
6 Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Jacob.
7 Attóllite portas príncipes vestras, † et elevámini portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
8 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? † Dóminus fortis et potens: * Dóminus potens in prǽlio.
9 Attóllite portas príncipes vestras, † et elevámini portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
10 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus virtútum ipse est Rex glóriæ.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof: * the world, and all they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas; * and hath prepared it upon the rivers.
3 Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: * or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, † who hath not taken his soul in vain, * nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.
5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God his Saviour.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, * of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.
8 Who is this King of Glory? † the Lord who is strong and mighty: * the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.
10 Who is this King of Glory? * the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Revértere, revértere Sunamítis: revértere, revértere, ut intueámur te.

Return, return, O Shulammith! Return, return, that we may look upon thee.

Incipit Abdías Prophéta.

Lesson from the book of Abdias

Ecce párvulum dedi te in Géntibus: contemptíbilis tu es valde. Supérbia cordis tui éxtulit te, habitántem in scissúris petrárum, exaltántem sólium tuum: qui dicis in corde tuo: Quis détrahet me in terram?
℟. Deo grátias.

The vision of Abdias. Thus saith the Lord God to Edom: We have heard a rumour from the Lord, and he hath sent an ambassador to the nations: Arise, and let us rise up to battle against him. Behold I have made thee small among the nations: thou art exceeding contemptible. The pride of thy heart hath lifted thee up, who dwellest in the clefts of the rocks, and settest up thy throne on high: who sayest in thy heart: Who shall bring me down to the ground Though thou be exalted as an eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars: thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium I.

℟. Veni elécta mea, et ponam in te thronum meum: * Quia concupívit Rex spéciem tuam.
℣. Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
℟. Quia concupívit Rex spéciem tuam.

℟. Come, O My chosen one, and I will establish My throne in thee, * for the King hath greatly desired thy beauty.
℣. In thy comeliness and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℟. For the King hath greatly desired thy beauty.

Lectio II.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Unigénitus Dei Fílius * nos benedícere et adjuváre dignétur.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the Son, the Sole-begotten, * mercifully bless and keep us.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

If thieves had gone in to thee, if robbers by night, how wouldst thou have held thy peace? would they not have stolen till they had enough if the grapegatherers had come in to thee, would they not have left thee at the least a cluster? How have they searched Esau, how have they sought out his hidden things? They have sent thee out even to the border: all the men of thy confederacy have deceived thee: the men of thy peace have prevailed against thee: they that eat with thee shall lay snares under thee: there is no wisdom in him.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium II.

℟. Diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis: * Proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.
℣. Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
℟. Proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.

℟. Grace is poured into thy lips; * Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
℣. In thy comeliness and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℟. Therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.

Lectio III.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Spíritus sancti grátia * illúminet sensus et corda nostra.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the grace of God the Spirit * all our heart and mind enlighten.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

Shall not I in that day, saith the Lord, destroy the wise out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau And thy valiant men of the south shall be afraid, that man may be cut off from the mount of Esau. For the slaughter, and for the iniquity against thy brother Jacob, confusion shall cover thee, and thou shalt perish for ever. In the day when thou stoodest against him, when strangers carried away his army captive, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem: thou also wast as one of them.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium III.

℟. Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua * Inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
℣. Diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis, proptéra benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.
℟. Inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
℟. Inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.

℟. In thy comeliness and thy beauty, * go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℣. Grace is poured into thy lips, therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
℟. Go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.

Nocturnus II.

Spécie tua * et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.

In thy comeliness * and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.

Psalmus 44.

Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum: * dico ego ópera mea regi.
2 Lingua mea cálamus scribæ, * velóciter scribéntis.
3 Speciósus forma præ fíliis hóminum, diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis: * proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.
4 Accíngere gládio tuo super femur tuum, * potentíssime,
5 Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua * inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
6 Propter veritátem, et mansuetúdinem, et justítiam: * et dedúcet te mirabíliter déxtera tua.
7 Sagíttæ tuæ acútæ, pópuli sub te cadent, * in corda inimicórum regis.
8 Sedes tua Deus in sǽculum sǽculi: * virga directiónis virga regni tui.
9 Dilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: * proptérea unxit te Deus Deus tuus óleo lætítiæ præ consórtibus tuis.
10 Myrrha, et gutta, et cásia a vestiméntis tuis, a dómibus ebúrneis: * ex quibus delectavérunt te fíliæ regum in honóre tuo.
11 Astitit regína a dextris tuis in vestítu deauráto: * circúmdata varietáte.
Amen.

My heart hath uttered a good word: * I speak my works to the king;
2 My tongue is the pen of a scrivener * that writeth swiftly.
3 Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in thy lips; * therefore hath God blessed thee for ever.
4 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, * O thou most mighty.
5 With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, * proceed prosperously, and reign.
6 Because of truth and meekness and justice: * and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.
7 Thy arrows are sharp: under thee shall people fall, * into the hearts of the king's enemies.
8 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: * the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of uprightness.
9 Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: * therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
10 Myrrh and stacte and cassia perfume thy garments, from the ivory houses: * out of which the daughters of kings have delighted thee in thy glory.
11 The queen stood on thy right hand, in gilded clothing; * surrounded with variety.
12 Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: * and forget thy people and thy father's house.
13 And the king shall greatly desire thy beauty; * for he is the Lord thy God, and him they shall adore.
14 And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, * yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.
15 All the glory of the king's daughter is within in golden borders, * Clothed round about with varieties.
16 After her shall virgins be brought to the king: * her neighbours shall be brought to thee.
17 They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing: * they shall be brought into the temple of the king.
18 Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee: * thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.
19 They shall remember thy name * throughout all generations.
20 Therefore shall people praise thee for ever; * yea, for ever and ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.

In thy comeliness and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.

God shall help her * with His countenance; God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved.

Psalmus 45.

Amen.

Our God is our refuge and strength: * a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.
2 Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; * and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea.
3 Their waters roared and were troubled: * the mountains were troubled with his strength.
4 The stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful: * the most High hath sanctified his own tabernacle.
5 God is in the midst thereof, it shall not be moved: * God will help it in the morning early.
6 Nations were troubled, and kingdoms were bowed down: * he uttered his voice, the earth trembled.
7 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
8 Come and behold ye the works of the Lord: what wonders he hath done upon earth, * Making wars to cease even to the end of the earth.
9 He shall destroy the bow, and break the weapons: * and the shield he shall burn in the fire.
10 Be still and see that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations, and I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

God shall help her with His countenance; God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved.

Aquæ multæ * non potuérunt exstínguere caritátem.

Many waters * cannot quench love.

Psalmus 47.

Magnus Dóminus, et laudábilis nimis * in civitáte Dei nostri, in monte sancto ejus.
2 Fundátur exsultatióne univérsæ terræ mons Sion, * látera Aquilónis, cívitas regis magni.
3 Deus in dómibus ejus cognoscétur, * cum suscípiet eam.
4 Quóniam ecce reges terræ congregáti sunt: * convenérunt in unum.
5 Ipsi vidéntes sic admiráti sunt, conturbáti sunt, commóti sunt: * tremor apprehéndit eos.
6 Ibi dolóres ut parturiéntis: * in spíritu veheménti cónteres naves Tharsis.
7 Sicut audívimus, sic vídimus in civitáte Dómini virtútum, in civitáte Dei nostri: * Deus fundávit eam in ætérnum.
8 Suscépimus Deus misericórdiam tuam, * in médio templi tui.
9 Secúndum nomen tuum, Deus, sic et laus tua in fines terræ: * justítia plena est déxtera tua.
10 Lætétur mons Sion, et exsúltent fíliæ Judæ * propter judícia tua Dómine.
11 Circúmdate Sion, et complectímini eam: * narráte in túrribus ejus.
12 Pónite corda vestra in virtúte ejus: * et distribúite domos ejus, ut enarrétis in progénie áltera.
13 Quóniam hic est Deus, Deus noster in ætérnum, et in sǽculum sǽculi: * ipse reget nos in sǽcula.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised * in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2 With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded, * on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
3 In her houses shall God be known, * when he shall protect her.
4 For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves: * they gathered together.
5 So they saw, and they wondered, they were troubled, they were moved: * Trembling took hold of them.
6 There were pains as of a woman in labour. * With a vehement wind thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.
7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God hath founded it for ever.
8 We have received thy mercy, O God, * in the midst of thy temple.
9 According to thy name, O God, so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: * thy right hand is full of justice.
10 Let mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Juda be glad; * because of thy judgments, O Lord.
11 Surround Sion, and encompass her: * tell ye in her towers.
12 Set your hearts on her strength; * and distribute her houses, that ye may relate it in another generation.
13 For this is God, our God unto eternity, and for ever and ever: * he shall rule us for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Gertrúdis Islébii in Saxónia nóbili génere nata, quinquénnis in monastério Rodardénsi, órdinis sancti Benedícti, virginitátem suam ac seípsam Jesu Christo óbtulit. Quo ex témpore a mundánis rebus prorsus aliéna, virtutíque sédulo inténta, cœléstis vitæ genus instítuit.
℟. Deo grátias.

Gertrude was born of a noble family at Eisleben, in Saxony, (about the year of our Lord 1264.) At five years of age she offered her virginity and herself to Jesus Christ, in the Benedictine nunnery at Rodalsdorf. From that time forth she was utterly estranged from earthly things, ever striving for things higher, and began to lead a kind of heavenly life. To learning in human letters she added knowledge of the things of God. In the thought thereof she earnestly desired, and soon reached, the perfection of a Christian soul. Of Christ, and of the things in His life, she spoke oftentimes with movings of spirit. The glory of God was the one end of all her thoughts, and to that her every longing and her every act were given. Though God had crowned her with so many and so noble gifts both of nature and of grace, her belief regarding herself was so humble that she was used to number as among the greatest of the wonders of His goodness that He had always in His mercy borne with one who was so utterly unworthy.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium IV.

℟. Propter veritátem, et mansuetúdinem, et justítiam: * Et dedúcet te mirabíliter déxtera tua.
℣. Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
℟. Et dedúcet te mirabíliter déxtera tua.

℟. Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness; * And thy right hand shall lead thee wonderfully.
℣. In thy comeliness, and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
℟. And thy right hand shall lead thee wonderfully.

Lectio V.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Christus perpétuæ * det nobis gaúdia vitæ.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May Christ to all His people give, * for ever in His sight to live.

℟. Deo grátias.

In the thirtieth year of her age she was elected Abbess of Rodalsdorf, where she had professed herself in the religious life, and afterwards of Heldelfs. This office she bore for forty years in love, wisdom, and zeal for strict observance, so that the house seemed like an ideal example of a sisterhood of perfect nuns. To each one she was a mother and a teacher, and yet would be as the least of all, being in sooth in all lowliness among them as she that served. That she might be more utterly God's only, she tormented her body with sleeplessness, hunger, and other afflictions, but withal ever true to herself, stood forth a pattern of innocency, gentleness, and long-suffering. The salvation of her neighbours was her constant earnest endeavour, and her godly toil bore abundant fruit. The love of God oftentimes threw her into trances, and she was given the grace of the deepest contemplation, even to union of spirit with God.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium V.

℟. Dilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: * Proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus óleo lætítiæ.
℣. Propter veritátem, et mansuetúdinem, et justítiam.
℟. Proptérea unxit te Deus, Deus tuus óleo lætítiæ.

℟. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; * Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.
℣. Because of truth, and meekness, and righteousness.
℟. Therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness.

℟. Deo grátias.

Christ Himself, to show what such a bride was to Him, revealed that He had in the heart of Gertrude a pleasant dwelling-place. The Virgin Mother of God she ever sought with deep reverence as a mother and warden whom she had received from Jesus Himself, and from her she had many benefits. Toward the most Divine Sacrament of the Eucharist, and the sufferings of the Lord, her soul was moved with love and gratitude, so that she sometimes wept abundantly. She helped with daily gifts and prayers the souls of the just condemned to the purifying fire. She wrote much for the fostering of godliness. She was glorified also by revelations from God, and by the gift of prophecy. Her last illness was rather the wasting of a home-sickness to be with God than a decay of the flesh, and she left this life (to live the undying life in Him, upon the 17th day of November,) in the year of our Lord 1292. God made her bright with miracles both during her life and after her death.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

3 Declare his glory among the Gentiles: * his wonders among all people.
4 For the Lord is great, and exceedingly to be praised: * he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the Gentiles are devils: * but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Praise and beauty are before him: * holiness and majesty in his sanctuary.
7 Bring ye to the Lord, O ye kindreds of the Gentiles, bring ye to the Lord glory and honour: * Bring to the Lord glory unto his name.
8 Bring up sacrifices, and come into his courts: * Adore ye the Lord in his holy court.
9 Let all the earth be moved at his presence. * Say ye among the Gentiles, the Lord hath reigned.
10 For he hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: * he will judge the people with justice.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea be moved, and the fulness thereof: * The fields and all things that are in them shall be joyful.
12 Then shall all the trees of the woods rejoice Before the face of the Lord, because he cometh: * because he cometh to judge the earth.
13 He shall judge the world with justice, * and the people with his truth.

Draw me after thee; * we will run after the savour of thy good ointments; thy name is as oil poured forth.

Psalmus 96.

Dóminus regnávit, exsúltet terra: * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.
2 Nubes, et calígo in circúitu ejus: * justítia, et judícium corréctio sedis ejus.
3 Ignis ante ipsum præcédet, * et inflammábit in circúitu inimícos ejus.
5 Montes, sicut cera fluxérunt a fácie Dómini: * a fácie Dómini omnis terra.

4 His lightnings have shone forth to the world: * the earth saw and trembled.
5 The mountains melted like wax, at the presence of the Lord: * at the presence of the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens declared his justice: * and all people saw his glory.
7 Let them be all confounded that adore graven things, * and that glory in their idols.
8 Adore him, all you his angels: * Sion heard, and was glad.
9 And the daughters of Juda rejoiced, * because of thy judgments, O Lord.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

A Lesson from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Matth. 25.

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Símile erit regnum cœlórum decem virgínibus: quæ accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. Et réliqua.

At that time: Jesus said to His disciples: The Kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the Bridegroom and the Bride. And so on.

Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ.

Homily by Pope St. Gregory.

Hom. 12. in Evang.

℟. Deo grátias.

Dearly beloved brethren; oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VII.

℟. This is one of those wise virgins, whom the Lord found watching, for when she took her lamp, she took oil with her. * And when the Lord came, she went in with him to the marriage.
℣. At midnight there was a cry made: Behold! the Bridegroom cometh! go ye out to meet him!
℟. And when the Lord came, she went in with him to the marriage.

Lectio VIII.

℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
She whose feast-day we are keeping, * be our Advocate with God.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

But, first of all, it is for us to ask: What is the kingdom of Heaven? And wherefore shall the same be likened unto ten virgins, whereof, albeit five were wise, yet five were foolish? For if the kingdom of heaven be such that there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatso- ever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, how can it be like unto five virgins which are foolish? But we must know that, in the word of God, the kingdom of heaven doth oftentimes signify the Church as she now is, touching the which the Lord saith in another place: The Son of Man shall send forth His Angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend. In that kingdom of Blessedness, wherein peace shall have her perfect reign, there shall be nothing found that offendeth for the angels to gather out.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VIII.

℟. Média nocte clamor factus est: * Ecce sponsus venit, exíte óbviam ei.
℣. Prudéntes Vírgines, aptáte vestras lámpades.
℟. Ecce sponsus venit, exíte óbviam ei.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
℟. Ecce sponsus venit, exíte óbviam ei.

℟. At midnight there was a cry made: * Behold! the Bridegroom cometh! go ye out to meet him!
℣. Trim your lamps, O ye wise virgins.
℟. Behold! the Bridegroom cometh! go ye out to meet him!
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Behold! the Bridegroom cometh! go ye out to meet him!

Lectio IX.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Ad societátem cívium supernórum * perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May He that is the Angels’ King * to that high realm His people bring.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

The body of every man doth consist of five senses, and five being doubled, is ten. Forasmuch, therefore, as the whole body of the faithful doth consist of two sexes, the Holy Church is likened unto ten virgins. And forasmuch as in the Church the good are for the present mingled with the bad, and the reprobate with the elect, it is rightly said that, of the ten virgins, five are wise and five are foolish. There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. And many there be likewise who afflict the body by self-control, and yet who seek for their self-control applause from men.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: * let me never be confounded.

O God, my God, * to thee do I watch at break of day.
2 For thee my soul hath thirsted; * for thee my flesh, O how many ways!
3 In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: * so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory.
4 For thy mercy is better than lives: * thee my lips shall praise.
5 Thus will I bless thee all my life long: * and in thy name I will lift up my hands.
6 Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: * and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips.
7 If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning: * because thou hast been my helper.
8 And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings: my soul hath stuck close to thee: * thy right hand hath received me.
9 But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: * they shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes.
10 But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: * because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things.

1 May God have mercy on us, and bless us: * may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.

3 Let people confess to thee, O God: * let all people give praise to thee.
4 Let the nations be glad and rejoice: * for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth.
5 Let the people, O God, confess to thee: let all the people give praise to thee: * the earth hath yielded her fruit.
6 May God, our God bless us, may God bless us: * and all the ends of the earth fear him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.

9 To execute upon them the judgment that is written: * this glory is to all his saints.

1 Praise ye the Lord in his holy places: * praise ye him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise ye him for his mighty acts: * praise ye him according to the multitude of his greatness.
3 Praise him with sound of trumpet: * praise him with psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with timbrel and choir: * praise him with strings and organs.
5 Praise him on high sounding cymbals: praise him on cymbals of joy: * let every spirit praise the Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

Brethren, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. † For not he that commendeth himself is approved, * but whom the Lord commendeth.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Canticum Zachariæ.

Símile est regnum cœlórum * hómini negotiatóri quærénti bonas margarítas: invénta una pretiósa, dedit ómnia sua, et comparávit eam.

The kingdom of heaven is like unto * a merchantman seeking goodly pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

Benedictus.

Amen.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, * for He hath visited and redeemed His people.
2 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, * in the house of His servant David:
3 As He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began:
4 That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
5 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, * and to remember His holy covenant:
6 The oath which He sware to our father Abraham, * that He would grant unto us,
7 That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, * might serve Him without fear,
8 In holiness and righteousness before Him * all the days of our life.
9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways:
10 To give knowledge of salvation unto His people, * by the remission of their sins;
11 Through the tender mercy of our God, * whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
12 To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

O clemens, o pia, o dulcis Virgo María.

Hail, O Queen, Mother of mercy! hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, the banished sons of Eve. Toward thee we sigh, weeping and groaning in this vale of tears. Ah, then, thou our Advocate, turn on us those merciful eyes of thine! And, after this our exile, show to us Jesus, the blessed Fruit of thy womb. O most merciful, O most gracious, O most sweet Virgin Mary!

℟. Amen.

O almighty God, Who, by the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, didst make ready both the body and soul of the glorious Virgin and Mother Mary worthily to become a meet dwelling for Thy Son; † grant that as we rejoice in her memory, * so by her pitiful intercession we may be delivered from the evils that continually hang over us, and finally from everlasting death.
