Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Ave María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum: benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Sancta María, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatóribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Credo in Spíritum sanctum, sanctam Ecclésiam cathólicam, sanctórum communiónem, remissiónem peccatórum, carnis resurrectiónem, vitam ætérnam. Amen.
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell: the third day He rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body. And the Life everlasting. Amen.
℣. Dómine, †︎ lábia mea apéries.
℟. Et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.
℣. O Lord, open Thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.
O quam pulchra.
O how lovely and glorious.
Psalmus 8.
Amen.
O Lord our Lord, * how admirable is thy name in the whole earth!
2 For thy magnificence is elevated * above the heavens.
3 Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise, because of thy enemies, * that thou mayst destroy the enemy and the avenger.
4 For I will behold thy heavens, the works of thy fingers: * the moon and the stars which thou hast founded.
5 What is man that thou art mindful of him? * or the son of man that thou visitest him?
6 Thou hast made him a little less than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour: * And hast set him over the works of thy hands.
7 Thou hast subjected all things under his feet, * all sheep and oxen: moreover the beasts also of the fields.
8 The birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, * that pass through the paths of the sea.
9 O Lord our Lord, * how admirable is thy name in all the earth!
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.
O how lovely and glorious is the generation of the chaste!

Psalmus 18.
10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * judícia Dómini vera, justificáta in semetípsa.
11 Desiderabília super aurum et lápidem pretiósum multum: * et dulcióra super mel et favum.
12 Etenim servus tuus custódit ea, * in custodiéndis illis retribútio multa.
Amen.
The heavens shew forth the glory of God, * and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.
2 Day to day uttereth speech, * and night to night sheweth knowledge.
3 There are no speeches nor languages, * where their voices are not heard.
4 Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth: * and their words unto the ends of the world.
5 He hath set his tabernacle in the sun: * and he, as a bridegroom coming out of his bride chamber,
6 Hath rejoiced as a giant to run the way: * His going out is from the end of heaven,
7 And his circuit even to the end thereof: * and there is no one that can hide himself from his heat.
8 The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
9 The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: * the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
11 More to be desired than gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
12 For thy servant keepeth them, * and in keeping them there is a great reward.
13 Who can understand sins? from my secret ones cleanse me, O Lord: * And from those of others spare thy servant.
14 If they shall have no dominion over me, then shall I be without spot: * and I shall be cleansed from the greatest sin.
15 And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: * and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight.
16 O Lord, my helper, * and my redeemer.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

3 Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini? * aut quis stabit in loco sancto ejus?

3 Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: * or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, † who hath not taken his soul in vain, * nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.
5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God his Saviour.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, * of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.
8 Who is this King of Glory? † the Lord who is strong and mighty: * the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians
Ephes. 1.
Grace be to you, and peace from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places, in Christ: As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Qui prædestinávit nos in adoptiónem filiórum per Jesum Christum in ipsum: secúndum propósitum voluntátis suæ, in laudem glóriæ grátiæ suæ, in qua gratificávit nos in dilécto Fílio suo. In quo habémus redemptiónem per sánguinem ejus, remissiónem peccatórum secúndum divítias grátiæ ejus, quæ superabundávit in nobis in omni sapiéntia, et prudéntia: ut notum fáceret nobis sacraméntum voluntátis suæ, secúndum beneplácitum ejus, quod propósuit in eo, in dispensatióne plenitúdinis témporum, instauráre ómnia in Christo, quæ in cœlis, et quæ in terra sunt, in ipso.
Tu autem Dómine miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.
Who hath predestinated us unto the adoption of children through Jesus Christ unto himself: according to the purpose of his will: Unto the praise of the glory of his grace, in which he hath graced us in his beloved son. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace, Which hath superabounded in us in all wisdom and prudence, That he might make known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure, which he hath purposed in him, In the dispensation of the fulness of times, to re-establish all things in Christ, that are in heaven and on earth, in him.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium II.
Jube, domne, benedícere.
Spíritus sancti grátia * illúminet sensus et corda nostra.
℟. Amen.
Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the grace of God the Spirit * all our heart and mind enlighten.
Amen.
In quo étiam et nos sorte vocáti sumus, prædestináti secúndum propósitum ejus, qui operátur ómnia secúndum consílium voluntátis suæ: ut simus in laudem glóriæ ejus nos, qui ante sperávimus in Christo: In quo et vos, cum audissétis verbum veritátis (Evangélium salútis vestræ) in quo et credéntes signáti estis Spíritu promissiónis sancto, qui est pignus hæreditátis nostræ, in redemptiónem acquisitiónis, in laudem glóriæ ipsíus.
Tu autem Dómine miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.
In whom we also are called by lot, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things according to the counsel of his will. That we may be unto the praise of his glory, we who before hoped Christ: In whom you also, after you had heard the word of truth, (the gospel of your salvation;) in whom also believing, you were signed with the holy Spirit of promise, Who is the pledge of our inheritance, unto the redemption of acquisition, unto the praise of his glory.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium III.
Spécie tua.
In thy comeliness.
Psalmus 44.
Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum: * dico ego ópera mea regi.
2 Lingua mea cálamus scribæ, * velóciter scribéntis.
3 Speciósus forma præ fíliis hóminum, diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis: * proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.
4 Accíngere gládio tuo super femur tuum, * potentíssime,
5 Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua * inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
6 Propter veritátem, et mansuetúdinem, et justítiam: * et dedúcet te mirabíliter déxtera tua.
7 Sagíttæ tuæ acútæ, pópuli sub te cadent, * in corda inimicórum regis.
8 Sedes tua Deus in sǽculum sǽculi: * virga directiónis virga regni tui.
9 Dilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: * proptérea unxit te Deus Deus tuus óleo lætítiæ præ consórtibus tuis.
10 Myrrha, et gutta, et cásia a vestiméntis tuis, a dómibus ebúrneis: * ex quibus delectavérunt te fíliæ regum in honóre tuo.
11 Astitit regína a dextris tuis in vestítu deauráto: * circúmdata varietáte.
Amen.
My heart hath uttered a good word: * I speak my works to the king;
2 My tongue is the pen of a scrivener * that writeth swiftly.
3 Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in thy lips; * therefore hath God blessed thee for ever.
4 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, * O thou most mighty.
5 With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, * proceed prosperously, and reign.
6 Because of truth and meekness and justice: * and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.
7 Thy arrows are sharp: under thee shall people fall, * into the hearts of the king's enemies.
8 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: * the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of uprightness.
9 Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: * therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
10 Myrrh and stacte and cassia perfume thy garments, from the ivory houses: * out of which the daughters of kings have delighted thee in thy glory.
11 The queen stood on thy right hand, in gilded clothing; * surrounded with variety.
12 Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: * and forget thy people and thy father's house.
13 And the king shall greatly desire thy beauty; * for he is the Lord thy God, and him they shall adore.
14 And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, * yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.
15 All the glory of the king's daughter is within in golden borders, * Clothed round about with varieties.
16 After her shall virgins be brought to the king: * her neighbours shall be brought to thee.
17 They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing: * they shall be brought into the temple of the king.
18 Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee: * thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.
19 They shall remember thy name * throughout all generations.
20 Therefore shall people praise thee for ever; * yea, for ever and ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.
Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
In thy comeliness and thy beauty, go forward, fare prosperously, and reign.
Adjuvábit eam.
God shall help her.
Psalmus 45.
Amen.
Our God is our refuge and strength: * a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.
2 Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; * and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea.
3 Their waters roared and were troubled: * the mountains were troubled with his strength.
4 The stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful: * the most High hath sanctified his own tabernacle.
5 God is in the midst thereof, it shall not be moved: * God will help it in the morning early.
6 Nations were troubled, and kingdoms were bowed down: * he uttered his voice, the earth trembled.
7 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
8 Come and behold ye the works of the Lord: what wonders he hath done upon earth, * Making wars to cease even to the end of the earth.
9 He shall destroy the bow, and break the weapons: * and the shield he shall burn in the fire.
10 Be still and see that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations, and I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.
God shall help her with His countenance; God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved.
Psalmus 47.
Magnus Dóminus, et laudábilis nimis * in civitáte Dei nostri, in monte sancto ejus.
2 Fundátur exsultatióne univérsæ terræ mons Sion, * látera Aquilónis, cívitas regis magni.
3 Deus in dómibus ejus cognoscétur, * cum suscípiet eam.
4 Quóniam ecce reges terræ congregáti sunt: * convenérunt in unum.
5 Ipsi vidéntes sic admiráti sunt, conturbáti sunt, commóti sunt: * tremor apprehéndit eos.
6 Ibi dolóres ut parturiéntis: * in spíritu veheménti cónteres naves Tharsis.
7 Sicut audívimus, sic vídimus in civitáte Dómini virtútum, in civitáte Dei nostri: * Deus fundávit eam in ætérnum.
8 Suscépimus Deus misericórdiam tuam, * in médio templi tui.
9 Secúndum nomen tuum, Deus, sic et laus tua in fines terræ: * justítia plena est déxtera tua.
10 Lætétur mons Sion, et exsúltent fíliæ Judæ * propter judícia tua Dómine.
11 Circúmdate Sion, et complectímini eam: * narráte in túrribus ejus.
12 Pónite corda vestra in virtúte ejus: * et distribúite domos ejus, ut enarrétis in progénie áltera.
13 Quóniam hic est Deus, Deus noster in ætérnum, et in sǽculum sǽculi: * ipse reget nos in sǽcula.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.
Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised * in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.
2 With the joy of the whole earth is mount Sion founded, * on the sides of the north, the city of the great king.
3 In her houses shall God be known, * when he shall protect her.
4 For behold the kings of the earth assembled themselves: * they gathered together.
5 So they saw, and they wondered, they were troubled, they were moved: * Trembling took hold of them.
6 There were pains as of a woman in labour. * With a vehement wind thou shalt break in pieces the ships of Tharsis.
7 As we have heard, so have we seen, in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: * God hath founded it for ever.
8 We have received thy mercy, O God, * in the midst of thy temple.
9 According to thy name, O God, so also is thy praise unto the ends of the earth: * thy right hand is full of justice.
10 Let mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Juda be glad; * because of thy judgments, O Lord.
11 Surround Sion, and encompass her: * tell ye in her towers.
12 Set your hearts on her strength; * and distribute her houses, that ye may relate it in another generation.
13 For this is God, our God unto eternity, and for ever and ever: * he shall rule us for evermore.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Martína virgo Romána, patre consulári, illústri génere nata, téneris adhuc annis orbáta paréntibus, christiánæ pietátis ardóre succénsa, divítias, quibus affluébat, mira in paúperes liberalitáte distríbuit. Sub Alexándro príncipe, cum deos inánes cólere juberétur, immáne fácinus summa libertáte detestátur. Quaprópter íterum atque íterum affécta verbéribus, uncis, úngulis férreis, testárum fragméntis laceráta, acutíssimis gládiis membrátim concísa, ádipe fervénti perúncta, demum in amphitheátro damnátur ad béstias: a quibus illǽsa divínitus evádens, in ardéntem rogum injécta, incólumis pari benefício servátur.
Tu autem Dómine miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.
Martina was a maiden of a most illustrious Roman family, daughter of a Consul. She lost her parents while still very young, and, being inflamed with Christian zeal, she distributed her wealth, whereof she had abundance, with great profusion among the poor. Under the Emperor Alexander, she was commanded to sacrifice to the imaginary gods, and refused with much boldness to commit this great wickedness. Upon this she was again and again scourged, and mangled with iron prongs and hooks, and pieces of broken pottery. Her limbs were cut off piece by piece with sharp swords, and boiling tallow poured upon the living trunk. Lastly she was sent to be eaten publicly by the wild beasts in the amphitheatre, but by the will of God they would not touch her, and she was then thrown upon a burning pile, but still remained alive.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium IV.
Jube, domne, benedícere.
Christus perpétuæ * det nobis gaúdia vitæ.
℟. Amen.
Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May Christ to all His people give, * for ever in His sight to live.
Amen.
℟. Deo grátias.
Come of her tormentors were so moved by the spectacle, that they repented, and, by the grace of God confessing the faith of Christ, through which she remained constant, were themselves tortured and beheaded. Martina herself lay praying, with a brightness on her face, while a matter like milk oozed from her body along with the blood, emitting a soft, sweet smell. She was as it were unconscious of an earthquake and most violent thunderstorm which arose and was raging, and while the lightning struck temples, and melted statues, she seemed in spirit rather to be seated above on a queenly throne, praising God in heaven among the Blessed.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium V.
Jube, domne, benedícere.
Ignem sui amóris * accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
℟. Amen.
Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the Spirit’s fire Divine * in our hearts enkindled shine.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.
The judge being infuriated at what had taken place, and chiefly at her unbending firmness, ordered the head of the martyr to be cut off. At the moment this was done, a peal which shook the city was heard, like a voice calling her home, and so great was the consternation, that it was made the means of conversion to many idolaters. The holy body of Martina wherein she had suffered in the Pontificate of Urban I. was discovered in the time of Urban VIII., in the very old Church called after her, situated at the foot of the Capitoline Hill, near the Mamertine Prison, along with the bodies of the holy martyrs Concordius, Epiphanius, and others. The Church was then altered and restored and handsomely decorated, and then the body was replaced in it, amid public rejoicings, with a solemn ceremony and procession.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

3 Declare his glory among the Gentiles: * his wonders among all people.
4 For the Lord is great, and exceedingly to be praised: * he is to be feared above all gods.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea be moved, and the fulness thereof: * The fields and all things that are in them shall be joyful.

Dóminus regnávit, exsúltet terra: * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.
2 Nubes, et calígo in circúitu ejus: * justítia, et judícium corréctio sedis ejus.
3 Ignis ante ipsum præcédet, * et inflammábit in circúitu inimícos ejus.

4 His lightnings have shone forth to the world: * the earth saw and trembled.
5 The mountains melted like wax, at the presence of the Lord: * at the presence of the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens declared his justice: * and all people saw his glory.
7 Let them be all confounded that adore graven things, * and that glory in their idols.
8 Adore him, all you his angels: * Sion heard, and was glad.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.
A Lesson from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.
Matth. 25.
In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Símile erit regnum cœlórum decem virgínibus: quæ accipiéntes lámpades suas, exiérunt óbviam sponso et sponsæ. Et réliqua.
At that time: Jesus said to His disciples: The Kingdom of heaven shall be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the Bridegroom and the Bride. And so on.
Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ.
Homily by Pope St. Gregory.
Hom. 12. in Evang.
℟. Deo grátias.
Dearly beloved brethren; oftentimes do I warn you to fly corrupt conversation, and to keep yourselves unspotted from the world. But the portion which is this day read from the Holy Gospel doth oblige me to say that even to these good things which ye do, ye must needs take all careful heed. Look ye well to it, that, when ye work righteousness, ye do it not as seeking the praise and admiration of men, for if the lust of praise do once creep in, that which seemeth so fair without, loseth its reward within. Behold how the Redeemer speaketh of these ten virgins. He calleth them all virgins, yet entered not all of them into the door of blessedness, for there were some of them who sought outwardly the honour of virginity, but would take no oil within their vessels with their lamps.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium VII.
℟. Amen.
Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
She whose feast-day we are keeping, * be our Advocate with God.
Amen.
℟. Deo grátias.
But, first of all, it is for us to ask: What is the kingdom of Heaven? And wherefore shall the same be likened unto ten virgins, whereof, albeit five were wise, yet five were foolish? For if the kingdom of heaven be such that there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whatso- ever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie, how can it be like unto five virgins which are foolish? But we must know that, in the word of God, the kingdom of heaven doth oftentimes signify the Church as she now is, touching the which the Lord saith in another place: The Son of Man shall send forth His Angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend. In that kingdom of Blessedness, wherein peace shall have her perfect reign, there shall be nothing found that offendeth for the angels to gather out.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
Responsorium VIII.
Jube, domne, benedícere.
Ad societátem cívium supernórum * perdúcat nos Rex Angelórum.
℟. Amen.
Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May He that is the Angels’ King * to that high realm His people bring.
Amen.
℟. Deo grátias.
The body of every man doth consist of five senses, and five being doubled, is ten. Forasmuch, therefore, as the whole body of the faithful doth consist of two sexes, the Holy Church is likened unto ten virgins. And forasmuch as in the Church the good are for the present mingled with the bad, and the reprobate with the elect, it is rightly said that, of the ten virgins, five are wise and five are foolish. There are many who have self-control, which do keep themselves from lusting after things outward, whose hope beareth them to things inward, who chastise the flesh, who long with intense home-sickness for their Fatherland which is in heaven, who seek an eternal reward, and who will not to receive for their labours the praise of men. These are they who reckon their glory, not in the mouths of men, but in the testimony of their own conscience. And many there be likewise who afflict the body by self-control, and yet who seek for their self-control applause from men.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.
