Ad Matutinum.

Nocturnus I.

Dírige.

Make my way straight before thy face, O Lord my God.

Psalmus 5.

9 Dómine deduc me in justítia tua: * propter inimícos meos dírige in conspéctu tuo viam meam.
12 Décidant a cogitatiónibus suis, secúndum multitúdinem impietátum eórum expélle eos, * quóniam irritavérunt te Dómine.
13 Et læténtur omnes, qui sperant in te, * in ætérnum exsultábunt: et habitábis in eis.
14 Et gloriabúntur in te omnes, qui díligunt nomen tuum, * quóniam tu benedíces justo.
15 Dómine, ut scuto bonæ voluntátis tuæ * coronásti nos.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

Give ear, O Lord, to my words, * understand my cry.
2 Hearken to the voice of my prayer, * O my King and my God.
3 For to thee will I pray: * O Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear my voice.
4 In the morning I will stand before thee, and will see: * because thou art not a God that willest iniquity.
5 Neither shall the wicked dwell near thee: * nor shall the unjust abide before thy eyes.
6 Thou hatest all the workers of iniquity: * Thou wilt destroy all that speak a lie.
7 The bloody and the deceitful man the Lord will abhor. * But as for me in the multitude of thy mercy,
8 I will come into thy house; * I will worship towards thy holy temple, in thy fear.
9 Conduct me, O Lord, in thy justice: * because of my enemies, direct my way in thy sight.
10 For there is no truth in their mouth; * their heart is vain.
11 Their throat is an open sepulchre: they dealt deceitfully with their tongues: * judge them, O God.
12 Let them fall from their devices: according to the multitude of their wickednesses cast them out: * for they have provoked thee, O Lord.
13 But let all them be glad that hope in thee: * they shall rejoice for ever, and thou shalt dwell in them.
14 And all they that love thy name shall glory in thee: * For thou wilt bless the just.
15 O Lord as with a shield of thy good will * thou hast crowned us.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Dírige Dómine Deus meus in conspéctu tuo viam meam.

Make my way straight before thy face, O Lord my God.

Convértere.

Return, O Lord, deliver my soul.

Psalmus 6.

Dómine, ne in furóre tuo árguas me, * neque in ira tua corrípias me.
2 Miserére mei Dómine quóniam infírmus sum: * sana me Dómine quóniam conturbáta sunt ossa mea.
4 Convértere Dómine, et éripe ánimam meam: * salvum me fac propter misericórdiam tuam.
8 Discédite a me omnes, qui operámini iniquitátem: * quóniam exaudívit Dóminus vocem fletus mei.
9 Exaudívit Dóminus deprecatiónem meam, * Dóminus oratiónem meam suscépit.
10 Erubéscant, et conturbéntur veheménter omnes inimíci mei: * convertántur et erubéscant valde velóciter.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

O Lord, rebuke me not in thy indignation, * nor chastise me in thy wrath.
2 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak: * heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.
3 And my soul is troubled exceedingly: * but thou, O Lord, how long?
4 Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: * O save me for thy mercy's sake.
5 For there is no one in death, that is mindful of thee: * and who shall confess to thee in hell?
6 I have laboured in my groanings, every night I will wash my bed: * I will water my couch with my tears.
7 My eye is troubled through indignation: * I have grown old amongst all my enemies.
8 Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity: * for the Lord hath heard the voice of my weeping.
9 The Lord hath heard my supplication: * the Lord hath received my prayer.
10 Let all my enemies be ashamed, and be very much troubled: * let them be turned back, and be ashamed very speedily.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Return, O Lord, deliver my soul O save me for thy mercy's sake.

Nequándo rápiat.

Lest he tear my soul like a lion,

Psalmus 7.

Dómine Deus meus in te sperávi: * salvum me fac ex ómnibus persequéntibus me, et líbera me.
9 Júdica me Dómine secúndum justítiam meam, * et secúndum innocéntiam meam super me.
10 Consumétur nequítia peccatórum, et díriges justum, * scrutans corda et renes Deus.
11 Justum adjutórium meum a Dómino, * qui salvos facit rectos corde.

O Lord my God, in thee have I put my trust: * save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me.
2 Lest at any time he seize upon my soul like a lion, * while there is no one to redeem me, nor to save.
3 O Lord my God, if I have done this thing, * if there be iniquity in my hands:
4 If I have rendered to them that repaid me evils, * let me deservedly fall empty before my enemies.
5 Let the enemy pursue my soul, and take it, and tread down my life on the earth, * and bring down my glory to the dust.
6 Rise up, O Lord, in thy anger: * and be thou exalted in the borders of my enemies.
7 And arise, O Lord my God, in the precept which thou hast commanded: * And a congregation of people shall surround thee.
8 And for their sakes return thou on high. * The Lord judgeth the people.
9 Judge me, O Lord, according to my justice, * and according to my innocence in me.
10 The wickedness of sinners shall be brought to nought: and thou shalt direct the just: * the searcher of hearts and reins is God.
11 Just is my help from the Lord: * who saveth the upright of heart.
12 God is a just judge, strong and patient: * is he angry every day?
13 Except you will be converted, he will brandish his sword: * he hath bent his bow and made it ready.
14 And in it he hath prepared the instruments of death, * he hath made ready his arrows for them that burn.
15 Behold he hath been in labour with injustice; * he hath conceived sorrow, and brought forth iniquity.
16 He hath opened a pit and dug it; * and he is fallen into the hole he made.
17 His sorrow shall be turned on his own head: * and his iniquity shall come down upon his crown.
18 I will give glory to the Lord according to his justice: * and will sing to the name of the Lord the most high.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Lest he tear my soul like a lion, while there is none to deliver, or to save.

Versiculus.

℣. A porta ínferi.
℟. Erue Dómine ánimas eórum.

℣. From the gates of hell.
℟. Deliver their souls, O Lord.

Dicitur secreto.

Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Lectio I.

Spare me, for my days are nothing. What is a man that thou shouldst magnify him? or why dost thou set thy heart upon him? Thou visitest him early in the morning, and thou provest him suddenly. How long wilt thou not spare me, nor suffer me to swallow down my spittle? I have sinned: what shall I do to thee, O keeper of men? why hast thou set me opposite to thee, and I am become burdensome to myself? Why dost thou not remove my sin, and why dost thou not take away my iniquity? Behold now I shall sleep in the dust: and if thou seek me in the morning, I shall not be.

Responsorium I.

℟. Credo quod Redémptor meus vivit, et in novíssimo die de terra surrectúrus sum: * Et in carne mea vidébo Deum Salvatórem meum.
℟. Et in carne mea vidébo Deum Salvatórem meum.

℟. I believe that my Redeemer liveth, and that I shall stand up from the earth at the latter day, * And in my flesh shall I see God my Saviour.
℣. Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.
℟. And in my flesh shall I see God my Saviour.

Lectio II.

Tædet ánimam meam vitæ meæ, dimíttam advérsum me elóquium meum, loquar in amaritúdine ánimæ meæ. Dicam Deo: Noli me condemnáre: índica mihi cur me ita júdices.

My soul is weary of my life, I will let go my speech against myself, I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. I will say to God: Do not condemn me: tell me why thou judgest me so. Doth it seem good to thee that thou shouldst calumniate me, and oppress me, the work of thy own hands, and help the counsel of the wicked? Hast thou eyes of flesh: or, shalt thou see as man seeth? Are thy days as the days of man, and are thy years as the times of men: That thou shouldst inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin? And shouldst know that I have done no wicked thing, whereas there is no man that can deliver out of thy hand.

Responsorium II.

℟. Qui Lázarum resuscitásti a monuménto fœ́tidum: * Tu eis Dómine dona réquiem, et locum indulgéntiæ.
℟. Tu eis Dómine dona réquiem, et locum indulgéntiæ.

℟. Thou Who didst call up Lazarus from the grave after that he had begun to stink * Do Thou, O Lord, grant them rest and a place of forgiveness.
℣. Thou Who shalt come to judge the quick and dead, and the world by fire
℟. Do Thou, O Lord, grant them rest and a place of forgiveness.

Lectio III.

Manus tuæ fecérunt me, et plasmavérunt me totum in circúitu: et sic repénte præcípitas me? Meménto quæso quod sicut lutum féceris me, et in púlverem redúces me. Nonne sicut lac mulsísti me, et sicut cáseum me coagulásti? Pelle et cárnibus vestísti me: óssibus et nervis compegísti me: Vitam et misericórdiam tribuísti mihi, et visitátio tua custodívit spíritum meum.

8 thy hands have made me, and fashioned me wholly round about, and dost thou thus cast me down headlong on a sudden? Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay, and thou wilt bring me into dust again. Hast thou not milked me as milk, and curdled me like cheese? Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh: thou hast put me together with bones and sinews: Thou hast granted me life and mercy, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

Responsorium III.

℟. Dómine, quando véneris judicáre terram, ubi me abscóndam a vultu iræ tuæ? * Quia peccávi nimis in vita mea.
℣. Commíssa mea pavésco, et ante te erubésco: dum véneris judicáre, noli me condemnáre.
℟. Quia peccávi nimis in vita mea.
℣. Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine: et lux perpétua lúceat eis.
℟. Quia peccávi nimis in vita mea.

℟. Lord, when Thou comest to judge the earth, where shall I hide myself from the face of thy wrath? * For I have sinned greatly in my life.
℣. I dread my sins, I blush before thee I see the great tribunal set! In fear and terror I implore thee, Forgive when soul and Judge are met!
℟. For I have sinned greatly in my life.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. For I have sinned greatly in my life.

Nocturnus II.

In loco páscuæ.

He maketh me to lie down.

Psalmus 22.

Dóminus regit me, et nihil mihi déerit: * in loco páscuæ ibi me collocávit.
2 Super aquam refectiónis educávit me: * ánimam meam convértit.
3 Dedúxit me super sémitas justítiæ, * propter nomen suum.
6 Parásti in conspéctu meo mensam, * advérsus eos, qui tríbulant me.
8 Et misericórdia tua subsequétur me * ómnibus diébus vitæ meæ:

The Lord ruleth me: and I shall want nothing. * He hath set me in a place of pasture.
2 He hath brought me up, on the water of refreshment: * He hath converted my soul.
3 He hath led me on the paths of justice, * for his own name's sake.
4 For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils, * for thou art with me.
5 Thy rod and thy staff, * they have comforted me.
6 Thou hast prepared a table before me * against them that afflict me.
7 Thou hast anointed my head with oil; * and my chalice which inebriateth me, how goodly is it!
8 And thy mercy will follow me * all the days of my life.
9 And that I may dwell in the house of the Lord * unto length of days.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

In loco páscuæ ibi me collocávit.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.

Delícta.

Lord, remember not the sins of my youth,

Psalmus 24.

4 Vias tuas Dómine demónstra mihi: * et sémitas tuas édoce me.
5 Dírige me in veritáte tua, et doce me: * quia tu es Deus salvátor meus, et te sustínui tota die.
10 Díriget mansuétos in judício: * docébit mites vias suas.

To thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul. * In thee, O my God, I put my trust; let me not be ashamed.
2 Neither let my enemies laugh at me: * for none of them that wait on thee shall be confounded.
3 Let all them be confounded that act unjust things * without cause.
4 Shew, O Lord, thy ways to me, * and teach me thy paths.
5 Direct me in thy truth, and teach me; * for thou art God my Saviour; and on thee have I waited all the day long.
6 Remember, O Lord, thy bowels of compassion; * and thy mercies that are from the beginning of the world.
7 The sins of my youth * and my ignorances do not remember.
8 According to thy mercy remember thou me: * for thy goodness' sake, O Lord.
9 The Lord is sweet and righteous: * therefore he will give a law to sinners in the way.
10 He will guide the mild in judgment: * he will teach the meek his ways.
11 All the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth, * to them that seek after his covenant and his testimonies.
12 For thy name's sake, O Lord, thou wilt pardon my sin: * for it is great.
13 Who is the man that feareth the Lord? * He hath appointed him a law in the way he hath chosen.
14 His soul shall dwell in good things: * and his seed shall inherit the land.
15 The Lord is a firmament to them that fear him: * and his covenant shall be made manifest to them.
16 My eyes are ever towards the Lord: * for he shall pluck my feet out of the snare.
17 Look thou upon me, and have mercy on me; * for I am alone and poor.
18 The troubles of my heart are multiplied: * deliver me from my necessities.
19 See my abjection and my labour; * and forgive me all my sins.
20 Consider my enemies for they are multiplied, * and have hated me with an unjust hatred.
21 Keep thou my soul, and deliver me: * I shall not be ashamed, for I have hoped in thee.
22 The innocent and the upright have adhered to me: * because I have waited on thee.
23 Deliver Israel, O God, * from all his tribulations.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Lord, remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions.

Credo vidére.

I believe that I shall yet see the goodness of the Lord.

Psalmus 26.

Dóminus illuminátio mea, et salus mea, * quem timébo?
2 Dóminus protéctor vitæ meæ, * a quo trepidábo?
3 Dum apprópiant super me nocéntes, * ut edant carnes meas:
7 Unam pétii a Dómino, hanc requíram, * ut inhábitem in domo Dómini ómnibus diébus vitæ meæ:
8 Ut vídeam voluptátem Dómini, * et vísitem templum ejus.
9 Quóniam abscóndit me in tabernáculo suo: * in die malórum protéxit me in abscóndito tabernáculi sui.
10 In petra exaltávit me: * et nunc exaltávit caput meum super inimícos meos.
11 Circuívi, et immolávi in tabernáculo ejus hóstiam vociferatiónis: * cantábo, et psalmum dicam Dómino.
12 Exaúdi Dómine vocem meam, qua clamávi ad te: * miserére mei, et exaúdi me.
13 Tibi dixit cor meum, exquisívit te fácies mea: * fáciem tuam Dómine requíram.
14 Ne avértas fáciem tuam a me: * ne declínes in ira a servo tuo.
15 Adjútor meus esto: * ne derelínquas me, neque despícias me Deus salutáris meus.
16 Quóniam pater meus, et mater mea dereliquérunt me: * Dóminus autem assúmpsit me.
17 Legem pone mihi Dómine in via tua: * et dírige me in sémitam rectam propter inimícos meos.
18 Ne tradíderis me in ánimas tribulántium me: * quóniam insurrexérunt in me testes iníqui, et mentíta est iníquitas sibi.
19 Credo vidére bona Dómini * in terra vivéntium.
20 Exspécta Dóminum, viríliter age: * et confortétur cor tuum, et sústine Dóminum.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

The Lord is my light and my salvation, * whom shall I fear?
2 The Lord is the protector of my life: * of whom shall I be afraid?
3 Whilst the wicked draw near against me, * to eat my flesh.
4 My enemies that trouble me, * have themselves been weakened, and have fallen.
5 If armies in camp should stand together against me, * my heart shall not fear.
If a battle should rise up against me, * in this will I be confident.
7 One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; * that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.
8 That I may see the delight of the Lord, * and may visit his temple.
9 For he hath hidden me in his tabernacle; * in the day of evils, he hath protected me in the secret place of his tabernacle.
10 He hath exalted me upon a rock: * and now he hath lifted up my head above my enemies.
11 I have gone round, and have offered up in his tabernacle a sacrifice of jubilation: * I will sing, and recite a psalm to the Lord.
12 Hear, O Lord, my voice, with which I have cried to thee: * have mercy on me and hear me.
13 My heart hath said to thee: My face hath sought thee: * thy face, O Lord, will I still seek.
14 Turn not away thy face from me; * decline not in thy wrath from thy servant.
15 Be thou my helper, * forsake me not; do not thou despise me, O God my Saviour.
16 For my father and my mother have left me: * but the Lord hath taken me up.
17 Set me, O Lord, a law in thy way, * and guide me in the right path, because of my enemies.
18 Deliver me not over to the will of them that trouble me; * for unjust witnesses have risen up against me; and iniquity hath lied to itself.
19 I believe to see the good things of the Lord * in the land of the living.
20 Expect the Lord, do manfully, and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Credo vidére bona Dómini in terra vivéntium.

I believe that I shall yet see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

℟. Even with the princes of his people.

Amen.

Lectio IV.

Respónde mihi: Quantas hábeo iniquitátes et peccáta, scélera mea et delícta osténde mihi. Cur fáciem tuam abscóndis, et arbitráris me inimícum tuum?

Answer me. How many are my iniquities and sins? make me know my crimes and offences. Why hidest thou thy face, and thinkest me thy enemy? Against a leaf, that is carried away with the wind, thou showest thy power, and thou pursuest a dry straw. For thou writest bitter things against me, and wilt consume me for the sins of my youth. Thou hast put my feet in the stocks, and hast observed all my paths, and hast considered the steps of my feet: Who am to be consumed as rottenness, and as a garment that is moth-eaten.

Responsorium IV.

℟. Meménto mei Deus, quia ventus est vita mea, * Nec aspíciat me visus hóminis.
℟. Nec aspíciat me visus hóminis.

℟. Remember, O God, that my life is wind. * The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more.
℣. Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord! Lord, hear my voice.
℟. The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more.

Lectio V.

Man born of a woman, living for a short time, is filled with many miseries. Who cometh forth like a flower, and is destroyed, and fleeth as a shadow, and never continueth in the same state. And dost thou think it meet to open thy eyes upon such an one, and to bring him into judgment with thee? Who can make him clean that is conceived of unclean seed? is it not thou who only art? The days of man are short, and the number of his months is with thee: thou hast appointed his bounds which cannot be passed. Depart a little from him, that he may rest, until his wished for day come, as that of the hireling

Responsorium V.

℟. Heu mihi Dómine, quia peccávi nimis in vita mea: Quid fáciam, miser? ubi fúgiam, nisi ad te Deus meus? * Miserére mei, dum véneris in novíssimo die.
℟. Miserére mei, dum véneris in novíssimo die.

℟. Woe is me, O Lord! for I have sinned greatly in my life. I am smitten what shall I do? Whither shall I flee but unto thee, O my God? * Have mercy upon me, when Thou comest at the latter day.
℣. My soul is sore vexed, but Thou, O Lord, help me.
℟. Have mercy upon me, when Thou comest at the latter day.

Lectio VI.

Quis mihi hoc tríbuat, ut in inférno prótegas me, et abscóndas me, donec pertránseat furor tuus, et constítuas mihi tempus in quo recordéris mei? Putásne mórtuus homo rursum vivat? Cunctis diébus quibus nunc mílito, exspécto donec véniat immutátio mea. Vocábis me, et ego respondébo tibi: óperi mánuum tuárum pórriges déxteram. Tu quidem gressus meos dinumerásti, sed parce peccátis meis.

Who will grant me this, that thou mayst protect me in hell, and hide me till thy wrath pass, and appoint me a time when thou wilt remember me? Shall man that is dead, thinkest thou, live again? all the days in which I am now in warfare, I expect until my change come. Thou shalt call me, and I will answer thee: to the work of thy hands thou shalt reach out thy right hand. Thou indeed hast numbered my steps, but spare my sins.

Responsorium VI.

℟. Ne recordéris peccáta mea Dómine, * Dum véneris judicáre sǽculum per ignem.
℣. Dírige Dómine Deus meus in conspéctu tuo viam meam.
℟. Dum véneris judicáre sǽculum per ignem.
℣. Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine: et lux perpétua lúceat eis.
℟. Dum véneris judicáre sǽculum per ignem.

℟. Hold not my sins in remembrance, O Lord, * When Thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
℣. Make my way straight before thy face, O Lord my God.
℟. When Thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. When Thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.

Nocturnus III.

Compláceat.

Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me.

Psalmus 39.

15 Tu autem Dómine ne longe fácias miseratiónes tuas a me: * misericórdia tua et véritas tua semper suscepérunt me.
16 Quóniam circumdedérunt me mala, quorum non est númerus: * comprehendérunt me iniquitátes meæ, et non pótui ut vidérem.
17 Multiplicátæ sunt super capíllos cápitis mei: * et cor meum derelíquit me.
18 Compláceat tibi Dómine ut éruas me: * Dómine, ad adjuvándum me réspice.

With expectation I have waited for the Lord, * and he was attentive to me.
2 And he heard my prayers, * and brought me out of the pit of misery and the mire of dregs.
3 And he set my feet upon a rock, * and directed my steps.
4 And he put a new canticle into my mouth, * a song to our God.
5 Many shall see, and shall fear: * and they shall hope in the Lord.
6 Blessed is the man whose trust is in the name of the Lord; * and who hath not had regard to vanities, and lying follies.
7 Thou hast multiplied thy wonderful works, O Lord my God: * and in thy thoughts there is no one like to thee.
8 I have declared and I have spoken * they are multiplied above number.
9 Sacrifice and oblation thou didst not desire; * but thou hast pierced ears for me.
10 Burnt offering and sin offering thou didst not require: * Then said I, Behold I come.
11 In the head of the book it is written of me that I should do thy will: * O my God, I have desired it, and thy law in the midst of my heart.
12 I have declared thy justice in a great church, * lo, I will not restrain my lips: O Lord, thou knowest it.
13 I have not hid thy justice within my heart: * I have declared thy truth and thy salvation.
14 I have not concealed thy mercy and thy truth * from a great council.
15 Withhold not thou, O Lord, thy tender mercies from me: * thy mercy and thy truth have always upheld me.
16 For evils without number have surrounded me; * my iniquities have overtaken me, and I was not able to see.
17 They are multiplied above the hairs of my head: * and my heart hath forsaken me.
18 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me, * look down, O Lord, to help me.
19 Let them be confounded and ashamed together, that seek after my soul * to take it away.
20 Let them be turned backward and be ashamed * that desire evils to me.
21 Let them immediately bear their confusion, * that say to me: Tis well, tis well.
22 Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: * and let such as love thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified.
23 But I am a beggar and poor: * the Lord is careful for me.
24 Thou art my helper and my protector: * O my God, be not slack.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Compláceat tibi Dómine, ut erípias me: Dómine ad adjuvándum me réspice.

Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me O Lord, look upon me to help me.

Sana Dómine.

Lord, heal my soul;

Psalmus 40.

3 Dóminus opem ferat illi super lectum dolóris ejus: * univérsum stratum ejus versásti in infirmitáte ejus.
8 Advérsum me susurrábant omnes inimíci mei: * advérsum me cogitábant mala mihi.
10 Etenim homo pacis meæ, in quo sperávi: * qui edébat panes meos, magnificávit super me supplantatiónem.
12 In hoc cognóvi quóniam voluísti me: * quóniam non gaudébit inimícus meus super me.
13 Me autem propter innocéntiam suscepísti: * et confirmásti me in conspéctu tuo in ætérnum.
14 Benedíctus Dóminus Deus Israël a sǽculo et usque in sǽculum: * fiat, fiat.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

Blessed is he that understandeth concerning the needy and the poor: * the Lord will deliver him in the evil day.
2 The Lord preserve him and give him life, and make him blessed upon the earth: * and deliver him not up to the will of his enemies.
3 The Lord help him on his bed of sorrow: * thou hast turned all his couch in his sickness.
4 I said: O Lord, be thou merciful to me: * heal my soul, for I have sinned against thee.
5 My enemies have spoken evils against me: * when shall he die and his name perish?
6 And if he came in to see me, he spoke vain things: * his heart gathered together iniquity to itself.
7 He went out * and spoke to the same purpose.
8 All my enemies whispered together against me: * they devised evils to me.
9 They determined against me an unjust word: * shall he that sleepeth rise again no more?
10 For even the man of peace, in whom I trusted, * who ate my bread, hath greatly supplanted me.
11 But thou, O Lord, have mercy on me, and raise me up again: * and I will requite them.
12 By this I know, that thou hast had a good will for me: * because my enemy shall not rejoice over me.
13 But thou hast upheld me by reason of my innocence: * and hast established me in thy sight for ever.
14 Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel from eternity to eternity. * So be it. So be it.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Sana Dómine ánimam meam, quia peccávi tibi.

Lord, heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

Sitívit.

My soul thirsteth for the living God;

Psalmus 41.

* et quare contúrbas me?
9 Abýssus abýssum ínvocat, * in voce cataractárum tuárum.
10 Omnia excélsa tua, et fluctus tui * super me transiérunt.
11 In die mandávit Dóminus misericórdiam suam: * et nocte cánticum ejus.
12 Apud me orátio Deo vitæ meæ, * dicam Deo: Suscéptor meus es.
13 Quare oblítus es mei? * et quare contristátus incédo, dum afflígit me inimícus?
14 Dum confringúntur ossa mea, * exprobravérunt mihi qui tríbulant me inimíci mei.
* quare tristis es ánima mea, et quare contúrbas me?
16 Spera in Deo, quóniam adhuc confitébor illi: * salutáre vultus mei, et Deus meus.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

As the hart panteth after the fountains of water; * so my soul panteth after thee, O God.
2 My soul hath thirsted after the strong living God; * when shall I come and appear before the face of God?
3 My tears have been my bread day and night, * whilst it is said to me daily: Where is thy God?
4 These things I remembered, and poured out my soul in me: * for I shall go over into the place of the wonderful tabernacle, even to the house of God:
5 With the voice of joy and praise; * the noise of one feasting.
6 Why art thou sad, O my soul? * and why dost thou trouble me?
7 Hope in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.
8 My soul is troubled within myself: * therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan and Hermoniim, from the little hill.
9 Deep calleth on deep, * at the noise of thy flood-gates.
10 All thy heights and thy billows * have passed over me.
11 In the daytime the Lord hath commanded his mercy; * and a canticle to him in the night.
12 With me is prayer to the God of my life. * I will say to God: Thou art my support.
13 Why hast thou forgotten me? * and why go I mourning, whilst my enemy afflicteth me?
14 Whilst my bones are broken, * my enemies who trouble me have reproached me;
15 Whilst they say to me day by day: Where is thy God? * Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why dost thou disquiet me?
16 Hope thou in God, for I will still give praise to him: * the salvation of my countenance, and my God.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Lectio VII.

Líbera me Dómine, et pone me juxta te, et cujúsvis manus pugnet contra me.

My spirit shall be wasted, my days shall be shortened, and only the grave remaineth for me. I have not sinned, and my eye abideth in bitterness. Deliver me O Lord, and set me beside thee, and let any man's hand fight against me. My days have passed away, my thoughts are dissipated, tormenting my heart. They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again. If I wait hell is my house, and I have made my bed in darkness. If I have said to rottenness: thou art my father; to worms, my mother and my sister. Where is now then my expectation, and who considereth my patience?

Responsorium VII.

℟. Peccántem me quotídie, et non me pœniténtiam, timor mortis contúrbat me: * Quia in inférno nulla est redémptio, miserére mei Deus, et salva me.
℣. Deus in nómine tuo salvum me fac, et in virtúte tua líbera me.
℟. Quia in inférno nulla est redémptio, miserére mei Deus, et salva me.

℟. Forasmuch as I sin daily, and repent not, the fear of death troubleth me. * O God, have mercy upon me, and save me, for in hell there is no redemption.
℣. Save me, O God, by thy name, and judge me in thy strength.
℟. O God, have mercy upon me, and save me, for in hell there is no redemption.

Lectio VIII.

Pelli meæ, consúmptis cárnibus, adhǽsit os meum, et derelícta sunt tantúmmodo lábia circa dentes meos. Miserémini mei, miserémini mei, saltem vos amíci mei, quia manus Dómini tétigit me. Quare persequímini me sicut Deus, et cárnibus meis saturámini?

The flesh being consumed. My bone hath cleaved to my skin, and nothing but lips are left about my teeth. Have pity on me, have pity on me, at least you my friends, because the hand of the Lord hath touched me. Why do you persecute me as God, and glut yourselves with my flesh? Who will grant me that my words may be written? Who will grant me that they may be marked down in a book? With an iron pen and in a plate of lead, or else be graven with an instrument in flint stone. For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and in the last day I shall rise out of the earth. And I shall be clothed again with my skin, and in my flesh I will see my God. Whom I myself shall see, and my eyes shall behold, and not another: this my hope is laid up in my bosom.

Responsorium VIII.

℟. Dómine secúndum actum meum noli me judicáre: nihil dignum in conspéctu tuo egi: ídeo déprecor majestátem tuam, * Ut tu Deus déleas iniquitátem meam.
℣. Amplius lava me Dómine ab injustítia mea, et a delícto meo munda me.
℟. Ut tu Deus déleas iniquitátem meam.

℟. O Lord, judge me not according to my works; for I have done nothing that can be counted in respect of thee. I beseech thy majesty therefore, that thou wouldest * Blot out my transgressions, O God.
℣. Lord, wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
℟. Blot out my transgressions, O God.

Lectio IX.

Quare de vulva eduxísti me? qui útinam consúmptus essem ne óculus me vidéret.

Why didst thou bring me forth out of the womb: O that I had been consumed that eye might not see me! I should have been as if I had not been, carried from the womb to the grave. Shall not the fewness of my days be ended shortly? suffer me, therefore, that I may lament my sorrow a little: Before I go, and return no more, to a land that is dark and covered with the mist of death: A land of misery and darkness, where the shadow of death, and no order, but everlasting horror dwelleth.

Responsorium IX.

℣. Clamántes et dicéntes: Advenísti Redémptor noster.
℟. Qui erant in pœnis tenebrárum.
℣. Réquiem ætérnam dona eis Dómine: et lux perpétua lúceat eis.
℟. Qui erant in pœnis tenebrárum.

℟. Deliver me from the ways of hell, O Lord, Who didst break the gates of brass in sunder, and didst descend into hell, and give them light, * That they that sat in affliction and darkness might behold thee.
℣. Crying and saying, Thou hast come, O our Redeemer
℟. That they that sat in affliction and darkness might behold thee.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. That they that sat in affliction and darkness might behold thee.

Psalmus 50.

Miserére mei Deus, * secúndum magnam misericórdiam tuam.
2 Et secúndum multitúdinem miseratiónum tuárum, * dele iniquitátem meam.
3 Amplius lava me ab iniquitáte mea: * et a peccáto meo munda me.
8 Aspérges me hyssópo, et mundábor: * lavábis me, et super nivem dealbábor.
9 Audítui meo dabis gaúdium et lætítiam: * et exsultábunt ossa humiliáta.
10 Avérte fáciem tuam a peccátis meis: * et omnes iniquitátes meas dele.
11 Cor mundum crea in me Deus: * et spíritum rectum ínnova in viscéribus meis.
12 Ne projícias me a fácie tua: * et Spíritum sanctum tuum ne aúferas a me.
13 Redde mihi lætítiam salutáris tui: * et spíritu principáli confírma me.

Have mercy on me, O God, * according to thy great mercy.
2 And according to the multitude of thy tender mercies * blot out my iniquity.
3 Wash me yet more from my iniquity, * and cleanse me from my sin.
4 For I know my iniquity, * and my sin is always before me.
5 To thee only have I sinned, and have done evil before thee: * that thou mayst be justified in thy words and mayst overcome when thou art judged.
6 For behold I was conceived in iniquities; * and in sins did my mother conceive me.
7 For behold thou hast loved truth: * the uncertain and hidden things of thy wisdom thou hast made manifest to me.
8 Thou shalt sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed: * thou shalt wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
9 To my hearing thou shalt give joy and gladness: * and the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
10 Turn away thy face from my sins, * and blot out all my iniquities.
11 Create a clean heart in me, O God: * and renew a right spirit within my bowels.
12 Cast me not away from thy face; * and take not thy holy spirit from me.
13 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, * and strengthen me with a perfect spirit.
14 I will teach the unjust thy ways: * and the wicked shall be converted to thee.
15 Deliver me from blood, O God, thou God of my salvation: * and my tongue shall extol thy justice.
16 O Lord, thou wilt open my lips: * and my mouth shall declare thy praise.
17 For if thou hadst desired sacrifice, I would indeed have given it: * with burnt offerings thou wilt not be delighted.
18 A sacrifice to God is an afflicted spirit: * a contrite and humbled heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
19 Deal favourably, O Lord, in thy good will with Sion; * that the walls of Jerusalem may be built up.
20 Then shalt thou accept the sacrifice of justice, oblations and whole burnt offerings: * then shall they lay calves upon thy altar.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Exsultábunt Dómino ossa humiliáta.

The bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Exaúdi Dómine.

Lord, hear.

Psalmus 64.

Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion: * et tibi reddétur votum in Jerúsalem.
2 Exaúdi oratiónem meam: * ad te omnis caro véniet.
3 Verba iniquórum prævaluérunt super nos: * et impietátibus nostris tu propitiáberis.
4 Beátus, quem elegísti, et assumpsísti: * inhabitábit in átriis tuis.
5 Replébimur in bonis domus tuæ: * sanctum est templum tuum, mirábile in æquitáte.
6 Exaúdi nos Deus salutáris noster, * spes ómnium fínium terræ, et in mari longe.
7 Prǽparans montes in virtúte tua, accínctus poténtia: * qui contúrbas profúndum maris sonum flúctuum ejus.
11 Rivos ejus inébria, multíplica genímina ejus: * in stillicídiis ejus lætábitur gérminans.

A Hymn, O God, becometh thee in Sion: * and a vow shall be paid to thee in Jerusalem.
2 O hear my prayer: * all flesh shall come to thee.
3 The words of the wicked have prevailed over us: * and thou wilt pardon our transgressions.
4 Blessed is he whom thou hast chosen and taken to thee: * he shall dwell in thy courts.
5 We shall be filled with the good things of thy house; * holy is thy temple, wonderful in justice.
6 Hear us, O God our saviour, * who art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and in the sea afar off.
7 Thou who preparest the mountains by thy strength, being girded with power: * Who troublest the depth of the sea, the noise of its waves.
8 The Gentiles shall be troubled, and they that dwell in the uttermost borders shall be afraid at thy signs: * thou shalt make the outgoings of the morning and of the evening to be joyful.
9 Thou hast visited the earth, and hast plentifully watered it; * thou hast many ways enriched it.
10 The river of God is filled with water, thou hast prepared their food: * for so is its preparation.
11 Fill up plentifully the streams thereof, multiply its fruits; * it shall spring up and rejoice in its showers.
12 Thou shalt bless the crown of the year of thy goodness: * and thy fields shall be filled with plenty.
13 The beautiful places of the wilderness shall grow fat: * and the hills shall be girded about with joy,
14 The rams of the flock are clothed, and the vales shall abound with corn: * they shall shout, yea they shall sing a hymn.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Exaúdi Dómine oratiónem meam: ad te omnis caro véniet.

Lord, hear my prayer; unto thee shall all flesh come.

Me suscépit.

Thy right hand.

Psalmus 62.

8 Et in velaménto alárum tuárum exsultábo, adhǽsit ánima mea post te: * me suscépit déxtera tua.
9 Ipsi vero in vanum quæsiérunt ánimam meam, introíbunt in inferióra terræ: * tradéntur in manus gládii, partes vúlpium erunt.
10 Rex vero lætábitur in Deo, laudabúntur omnes qui jurant in eo: * quia obstrúctum est os loquéntium iníqua.
Psalmus 66.
1 Deus misereátur nostri, et benedícat nobis: * illúminet vultum suum super nos, et misereátur nostri.
2 Ut cognoscámus in terra viam tuam: * in ómnibus Géntibus salutáre tuum.
3 Confiteántur tibi pópuli Deus: * confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes.
4 Læténtur et exsúltent Gentes: * quóniam júdicas pópulos in æquitáte, et Gentes in terra dírigis.
5 Confiteántur tibi pópuli Deus, confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes: * terra dedit fructum suum.
6 Benedícat nos Deus, Deus noster, benedícat nos Deus: * et métuant eum omnes fines terræ.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

O God, my God, * to thee do I watch at break of day.
2 For thee my soul hath thirsted; * for thee my flesh, O how many ways!
3 In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: * so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory.
4 For thy mercy is better than lives: * thee my lips shall praise.
5 Thus will I bless thee all my life long: * and in thy name I will lift up my hands.
6 Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: * and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips.
7 If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning: * because thou hast been my helper.
8 And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings: my soul hath stuck close to thee: * thy right hand hath received me.
9 But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: * they shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes.
10 But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: * because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things.

1 May God have mercy on us, and bless us: * may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.
2 That we may know thy way upon earth: * thy salvation in all nations.
3 Let people confess to thee, O God: * let all people give praise to thee.
4 Let the nations be glad and rejoice: * for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth.
5 Let the people, O God, confess to thee: let all the people give praise to thee: * the earth hath yielded her fruit.
6 May God, our God bless us, may God bless us: * and all the ends of the earth fear him.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Me suscépit déxtera tua Dómine.

Thy right hand upholdeth me.

A porta ínferi.

From the gates of hell.

Canticum Ezechiae.

Ego dixi: In dimídio diérum meórum * vadam ad portas ínferi.
2 Quæsívi resíduum annórum meórum. * Dixi: Non vidébo Dóminum Deum in terra vivéntium.
5 Præcísa est velut a texénte, vita mea: dum adhuc ordírer, succídit me: * de mane usque ad vésperam fínies me.
9 Dómine vim pátior, respónde pro me.
10 Recogitábo tibi omnes annos meos * in amaritúdine ánimæ meæ.
11 Dómine si sic vívitur, et in tálibus vita spíritus mei, corrípies me, et vivificábis me. * Ecce in pace amaritúdo mea amaríssima:
12 Tu autem eruísti ánimam meam ut non períret: * projecísti post tergum tuum ómnia peccáta mea.
13 Quia non inférnus confitébitur tibi, neque mors laudábit te: * non exspectábunt qui descéndunt in lacum, veritátem tuam.
14 Vivens vivens ipse confitébitur tibi, sicut et ego hódie: * pater fíliis notam fáciet veritátem tuam.
15 Dómine salvum me fac, * et psalmos nostros cantábimus cunctis diébus vitæ nostræ in domo Dómini.
Réquiem ætérnam * dona eis Dómine.
Et lux perpétua * lúceat eis.

I said: In the midst of my days * I shall go to the gates of hell:
2 I sought for the residue of my years. * I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living.
3 I shall behold man no more, * nor the inhabitant of rest.
4 My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, * as a shepherd's tent.
5 My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he cut me off: * from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me.
6 I hoped till morning, * as a lion so hath he broken all my bones:
7 from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. * I will cry like a young swallow, I will meditate like a dove:
8 My eyes are weakened * looking upward:
9 Lord, I suffer violence, answer thou for me. * What shall I say, or what shall he answer for me, whereas he himself hath done it?
10 I will recount to thee all my years * in the bitterness of my soul.
11 O Lord, if man's life be such, and the life of my spirit be in such things as these, thou shalt correct me, and make me to live. * Behold in peace is my bitterness most bitter:
12 But thou hast delivered my soul that it should not perish, * thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
13 For hell shall not confess to thee, neither shall death praise thee: * nor shall they that go down into the pit, look for thy truth.
14 The living, the living, he shall give praise to thee, as I do this day: * the father shall make thy truth known to the children.
15 O Lord, save me, * and we will sing our psalms all the days of our life in the house of the Lord.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

A porta ínferi érue Dómine ánimam meam.

From the gates of hell deliver my soul, O Lord.

Omnis spíritus.

Let everything that hath breath.

Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: * praise ye him in the high places.
2 Praise ye him, all his angels: * praise ye him, all his hosts.
3 Praise ye him, O sun and moon: * praise him, all ye stars and light.
4 Praise him, ye heavens of heavens: * and let all the waters that are above the heavens praise the name of the Lord.
5 For he spoke, and they were made: * he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath established them for ever, and for ages of ages: * he hath made a decree, and it shall not pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth, * ye dragons, and all ye deeps:

11 Kings of the earth and all people: * princes and all judges of the earth:
12 Young men and maidens: let the old with the younger, praise the name of the Lord: * for his name alone is exalted.
13 The praise of him is above heaven and earth: * and he hath exalted the horn of his people.
14 A hymn to all his saints: * to the children of Israel, a people approaching to him.

1 Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: * let his praise be in the church of the saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: * and let the children of Sion be joyful in their king.
3 Let them praise his name in choir: * let them sing to him with the timbrel and the psaltery.
4 For the Lord is well pleased with his people: * and he will exalt the meek unto salvation.
5 The saints shall rejoice in glory: * they shall be joyful in their beds.
6 The high praises of God shall be in their mouth: * and two-edged swords in their hands:

8 To bind their kings with fetters, * and their nobles with manacles of iron.
9 To execute upon them the judgment that is written: * this glory is to all his saints.

Benedictus.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, * for He hath visited and redeemed His people.
2 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, * in the house of His servant David:
3 As He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began:
4 That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
5 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, * and to remember His holy covenant:
6 The oath which He sware to our father Abraham, * that He would grant unto us,
7 That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, * might serve Him without fear,
8 In holiness and righteousness before Him * all the days of our life.
9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways:
10 To give knowledge of salvation unto His people, * by the remission of their sins;
11 Through the tender mercy of our God, * whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
12 To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * to guide our feet into the way of peace.
O Lord, grant them * eternal rest.
And let the everlasting light * shine upon them.

Ego sum resurréctio et vita: qui credit in me, étiam si mórtuus fúerit, vivet: et omnis qui vivit et credit in me, non moriétur in ætérnum.

I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.
