Die 25 Aprilis 2027.

S. Marci Evangelistæ.

Duplex II. Classis.

Amen.
Dómine in unióne illíus divínæ intentiónis, qua ipse in terris laudes Deo persolvísti, has tibi Horas persólvo.

O Lord, open Thou my mouth that I may bless Thy Holy Name. Cleanse my heart from all vain, evil, and wandering thoughts; enlighten my understanding; kindle my affections, that I may pray to, and praise Thee with attention and devotion; and may worthily be heard before the presence of Thy Divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, in union with that Divine Intention wherewith Thou didst Thyself praise God, while as Thou wast on earth, I offer these Hours unto Thee.

Ad Matutinum.

Dicuntur secreto.

Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Ave María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum: benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Sancta María, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatóribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Credo in Spíritum sanctum, sanctam Ecclésiam cathólicam, sanctórum communiónem, remissiónem peccatórum, carnis resurrectiónem, vitam ætérnam. Amen.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell: the third day He rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body. And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Deinde clara voce:

℣. Dómine, †︎ lábia mea apéries.
℟. Et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.

℣. O Lord, open Thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

℣. Deus ✠ in adjutórium meum inténde.
℟. Dómine ad adjuvándum me festína.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen. Allelúja.

℣. Make haste, ✠ O God, to deliver me.
℟. Make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia.

Invitatorium.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Psalmus 94.

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo salutári nostro: præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the God of our Salvation: let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam, quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods: for the Lord will not cast off His people: for in His hand are all the ends of the earth; and the heights of the hills are His also.

Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

For the sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land: O come, let us worship and fall down; let us cry unto the Lord our Maker. For He is the Lord our God; and we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Hódie si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto: ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea.

To-day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your heart; as in in the Provocation, and as in the day of Temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works.

Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi, Semper hi errant corde: ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas, quibus jurávi in ira mea, si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Forty years long was I grieved with that generation and said, It is a people that do alway err in their heart, and they have not known My ways: unto whom I sware in My wrath that they should not enter into My rest.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Regem Apostolórum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus, allelúja.

The Lord, He is King of the Apostles. * O come, let us worship Him, Alleluia.

Nocturnus I.

Stabunt justi * in magna constántia advérsus eos, qui se angustiavérunt, allelúja.

The righteous shall stand * in great boldness before the face of such as have afflicted them, Alleluia.

Psalmus 18.

10 Timor Dómini sanctus, pérmanens in sǽculum sǽculi: * judícia Dómini vera, justificáta in semetípsa.
11 Desiderabília super aurum et lápidem pretiósum multum: * et dulcióra super mel et favum.
12 Etenim servus tuus custódit ea, * in custodiéndis illis retribútio multa.
Amen.

The heavens shew forth the glory of God, * and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.
2 Day to day uttereth speech, * and night to night sheweth knowledge.
3 There are no speeches nor languages, * where their voices are not heard.
4 Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth: * and their words unto the ends of the world.
5 He hath set his tabernacle in the sun: * and he, as a bridegroom coming out of his bride chamber,
6 Hath rejoiced as a giant to run the way: * His going out is from the end of heaven,
7 And his circuit even to the end thereof: * and there is no one that can hide himself from his heat.
8 The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: * the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
9 The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: * the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: * the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
11 More to be desired than gold and many precious stones: * and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
12 For thy servant keepeth them, * and in keeping them there is a great reward.
13 Who can understand sins? from my secret ones cleanse me, O Lord: * And from those of others spare thy servant.
14 If they shall have no dominion over me, then shall I be without spot: * and I shall be cleansed from the greatest sin.
15 And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: * and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight.
16 O Lord, my helper, * and my redeemer.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 33.

Benedícam Dóminum in omni témpore: * semper laus ejus in ore meo.
7 Immíttet Angelus Dómini in circúitu timéntium eum: * et erípiet eos.
11 Veníte fílii audíte me: * timórem Dómini docébo vos.
Amen.

I will bless the Lord at all times, * his praise shall be always in my mouth.
2 In the Lord shall my soul be praised: * let the meek hear and rejoice.
3 O magnify the Lord with me; * and let us extol his name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me; * and he delivered me from all my troubles.
5 Come ye to him and be enlightened: * and your faces shall not be confounded.
6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him: * and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord shall encamp round about them that fear him: * and shall deliver them.
8 O taste, and see that the Lord is sweet: * blessed is the man that hopeth in him.
9 Fear the Lord, all ye his saints: * for there is no want to them that fear him.
10 The rich have wanted, and have suffered hunger: * but they that seek the Lord shall not be deprived of any good.
11 Come, children, hearken to me: * I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who is the man that desireth life: * who loveth to see good days?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, * and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Turn away from evil and do good: * seek after peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the just: * and his ears unto their prayers.
16 But the countenance of the Lord is against them that do evil things: * to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The just cried, and the Lord heard them: * and delivered them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart: * and he will save the humble of spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the just; * but out of them all will the Lord deliver them.
20 The Lord keepeth all their bones, * not one of them shall be broken.
21 The death of the wicked is very evil: * and they that hate the just shall be guilty.
22 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants: * and none of them that trust in him shall offend.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 44.

Eructávit cor meum verbum bonum: * dico ego ópera mea regi.
2 Lingua mea cálamus scribæ, * velóciter scribéntis.
3 Speciósus forma præ fíliis hóminum, diffúsa est grátia in lábiis tuis: * proptérea benedíxit te Deus in ætérnum.
4 Accíngere gládio tuo super femur tuum, * potentíssime,
5 Spécie tua et pulchritúdine tua * inténde, próspere procéde, et regna.
6 Propter veritátem, et mansuetúdinem, et justítiam: * et dedúcet te mirabíliter déxtera tua.
7 Sagíttæ tuæ acútæ, pópuli sub te cadent, * in corda inimicórum regis.
8 Sedes tua Deus in sǽculum sǽculi: * virga directiónis virga regni tui.
9 Dilexísti justítiam, et odísti iniquitátem: * proptérea unxit te Deus Deus tuus óleo lætítiæ præ consórtibus tuis.
10 Myrrha, et gutta, et cásia a vestiméntis tuis, a dómibus ebúrneis: * ex quibus delectavérunt te fíliæ regum in honóre tuo.
11 Astitit regína a dextris tuis in vestítu deauráto: * circúmdata varietáte.
Amen.

My heart hath uttered a good word: * I speak my works to the king;
2 My tongue is the pen of a scrivener * that writeth swiftly.
3 Thou art beautiful above the sons of men: grace is poured abroad in thy lips; * therefore hath God blessed thee for ever.
4 Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, * O thou most mighty.
5 With thy comeliness and thy beauty set out, * proceed prosperously, and reign.
6 Because of truth and meekness and justice: * and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.
7 Thy arrows are sharp: under thee shall people fall, * into the hearts of the king's enemies.
8 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: * the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of uprightness.
9 Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: * therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
10 Myrrh and stacte and cassia perfume thy garments, from the ivory houses: * out of which the daughters of kings have delighted thee in thy glory.
11 The queen stood on thy right hand, in gilded clothing; * surrounded with variety.
12 Hearken, O daughter, and see, and incline thy ear: * and forget thy people and thy father's house.
13 And the king shall greatly desire thy beauty; * for he is the Lord thy God, and him they shall adore.
14 And the daughters of Tyre with gifts, * yea, all the rich among the people, shall entreat thy countenance.
15 All the glory of the king's daughter is within in golden borders, * Clothed round about with varieties.
16 After her shall virgins be brought to the king: * her neighbours shall be brought to thee.
17 They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing: * they shall be brought into the temple of the king.
18 Instead of thy fathers, sons are born to thee: * thou shalt make them princes over all the earth.
19 They shall remember thy name * throughout all generations.
20 Therefore shall people praise thee for ever; * yea, for ever and ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Incipit liber Ezechiélis Prophétæ.

Here beginneth the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel.

Ezech. 1.

℟. Deo grátias.

And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. In the fifth day of the month, which was the fifth year of King Jehoiachim’s captivity, the word of the Lord came unto Ezekiel, the son of Buzi, the Priest, in the land of the Chaldeans, by the river Chebar, and the hand of the Lord was there upon him. And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the North, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of the midst thereof, (that is, out of the midst of the fire,) as the colour of amber.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium I.

℟. Beátus vir qui métuit Dóminum, allelúja: * In mandátis ejus cupit nimis, allelúja, allelúja, allelúja.
℣. Glória et divítiæ in domo ejus, et justítia ejus manet in sǽculum sǽculi.
℟. In mandátis ejus cupit nimis, allelúja, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, Alleluia; * That delighteth greatly in His commandments, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
℣. Glory and riches shall be in his house, and his righteousness endureth for ever.
℟. That delighteth greatly in His commandments, Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Lectio II.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Unigénitus Dei Fílius * nos benedícere et adjuváre dignétur.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the Son, the Sole-begotten, * mercifully bless and keep us.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

Also in the midst thereof the likeness of four living creatures; and this was their appearance, they had the likeness of a man. And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. Their feet were straight feet, and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calf’s foot, and they sparkled like the colour of glowing brass. And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides, and they had faces and wings on four sides. And the wings of one were joined to the wings of another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium II.

℟. Tristítia vestra, allelúja, * Convertétur in gaúdium, allelúja, allelúja.
℟. Convertétur in gaúdium, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. Your sorrow, Alleluia: * Shall be turned to joy, Alleluia, alleluia.
℣. The world shall rejoice, and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow:
℟. Shall be turned to joy, Alleluia, alleluia.

Lectio III.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Spíritus sancti grátia * illúminet sensus et corda nostra.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the grace of God the Spirit * all our heart and mind enlighten.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man and the face of a lion on the right side, and they four had the face of an ox on the left side, and they four had the face of an eagle above. Thus were their faces, and their wings were stretched upward, two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies; and they went every one straight forward. Whither the spirit was to go, they went, and they turned not when they went.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Nocturnus II.

Behold, * how they are numbered among the children of God, and their lot is among the Saints, Alleluia.

Psalmus 46.

Omnes Gentes plaúdite mánibus: * jubiláte Deo in voce exsultatiónis.
2 Quóniam Dóminus excélsus, terríbilis: * Rex magnus super omnem terram.
3 Subjécit pópulos nobis: * et Gentes sub pédibus nostris.
4 Elégit nobis hæreditátem suam: * spéciem Jacob, quam diléxit.
5 Ascéndit Deus in júbilo: * et Dóminus in voce tubæ.
6 Psállite Deo nostro, psállite: * psállite Regi nostro, psállite.
7 Quóniam Rex omnis terræ Deus: * psállite sapiénter.
8 Regnábit Deus super Gentes: * Deus sedet super sedem sanctam suam.
Amen.

O clap your hands, all ye nations: * shout unto God with the voice of Joy,
2 For the Lord is high, terrible: * a great king over all the earth.
3 He hath subdued the people under us; * and the nations under our feet.
4 He hath chosen for us his inheritance * the beauty of Jacob which he hath loved.
5 God is ascended with jubilee, * and the Lord with the sound of trumpet.
6 Sing praises to our God, sing ye: * sing praises to our king, sing ye.
7 For God is the king of all the earth: * sing ye wisely.
8 God shall reign over the nations: * God sitteth on his holy throne.
9 The princes of the people are gathered together, with the God of Abraham: * for the strong gods of the earth are exceedingly exalted.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 60.

Exaúdi Deus deprecatiónem meam: * inténde oratióni meæ.
2 A fínibus terræ ad te clamávi: * dum anxiarétur cor meum, in petra exaltásti me.
3 Deduxísti me, quia factus es spes mea: * turris fortitúdinis a fácie inimíci.
4 Inhabitábo in tabernáculo tuo in sǽcula: * prótegar in velaménto alárum tuárum.
5 Quóniam tu Deus meus exaudísti oratiónem meam: * dedísti hæreditátem timéntibus nomen tuum.
6 Dies super dies regis adjícies: * annos ejus usque in diem generatiónis et generatiónis.
7 Pérmanet in ætérnum in conspéctu Dei: * misericórdiam et veritátem ejus quis requíret?
8 Sic psalmum dicam nómini tuo in sǽculum sǽculi: * ut reddam vota mea de die in diem.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Hear, O God, my supplication: * be attentive to my prayer,
2 To thee have I cried from the ends of the earth: * when my heart was in anguish, thou hast exalted me on a rock.
3 Thou hast conducted me; for thou hast been my hope; * a tower of strength against the face of the enemy.
4 In thy tabernacle I shall dwell for ever: * I shall be protected under the covert of thy wings.
5 For thou, my God, hast heard my prayer: * thou hast given an inheritance to them that fear thy name.
6 Thou wilt add days to the days of the king: * his years even to generation and generation.
7 He abideth for ever in the sight of God: * his mercy and truth who shall search?
8 So will I sing a psalm to thy name for ever and ever: * that I may pay my vows from day to day.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 63.

Exaúdi Deus oratiónem meam cum déprecor: * a timóre inimíci éripe ánimam meam.
2 Protexísti me a convéntu malignántium: * a multitúdine operántium iniquitátem.
Amen.

Hear, O God, my prayer, when I make supplication to thee: * deliver my soul from the fear of the enemy.
2 Thou hast protected me from the assembly of the malignant; * from the multitude of the workers of iniquity.
3 For they have whetted their tongues like a sword; * they have bent their bow a bitter thing, to shoot in secret the undefiled.
4 They will shoot at him on a sudden, and will not fear: * they are resolute in wickedness.
5 They have talked of hiding snares; * they have said: Who shall see them?
6 They have searched after iniquities: * they have failed in their search.
7 Man shall come to a deep heart: * and God shall be exalted.
8 The arrows of children are their wounds: * and their tongues against them are made weak.
9 All that saw them were troubled; * And every man was afraid.
10 And they declared the works of God: * and understood his doings.
11 The just shall rejoice in the Lord, and shall hope in him: * and all the upright in heart shall be praised.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

From the Book upon Church Writers, composed by St. Jerome, Priest at Bethlehem.

℟. Deo grátias.

Mark was the disciple and interpreter of Peter, and it was from what he had heard Peter tell, that, at the request of the brethren at Rome, he wrote the shortest of the Gospels. When Peter had heard it, he approved it, and gave it to the Church to be read, by his authority. Mark betook himself to Egypt, with the Gospel which he had compiled, and was the first man who preached Christ at Alexandria. There he founded a Church with such teaching and austerity of life, that all who followed Christ were constrained to imitate him.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium IV.

℟. Lux perpétua lucébit sanctis tuis Dómine, * Et ætérnitas témporum, allelúja, allelúja.
℣. Lætítia sempitérna erit super cápita eórum: gaúdium et exsultatiónem obtinébunt.
℟. Et ætérnitas témporum, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. The everlasting light shall shine upon Thy Saints, O Lord. * Even unto everlasting, Alleluia.
℣. Everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness.
℟. Even unto everlasting, Alleluia.

Lectio V.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Christus perpétuæ * det nobis gaúdia vitæ.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May Christ to all His people give, * for ever in His sight to live.
Amen.

Dénique Philo, disertíssimus Judæórum, videns Alexandríæ primam ecclésiam adhuc judaizántem, quasi in laudem gentis suæ librum super eórum conversatióne scripsit.
℟. Deo grátias.

Last of all, Philo, that most learned Jew, observing that the first Church of Alexandria still kept the law of Moses, wrote a book concerning their manners, as if in praise of his own nation, wherein he saith that under the teaching of Mark, the Christians of Alexandria had all things in common, just as Luke telleth us was the case with all them that believed at Jerusalem. Mark died in the eighth year of Nero, and was buried at Alexandria. Anianus succeeded him.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium V.

℟. Virtúte magna reddébant Apóstoli * Testimónium resurrectiónis Jesu Christi Dómini nostri, allelúja, allelúja.
℣. Repléti quidem Spíritu sancto, loquebántur cum fidúcia verbum Dei.
℟. Testimónium resurrectiónis Jesu Christi Dómini nostri, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. With great power gave the Apostles: * Witness of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, Alleluia.
℣. They were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
℟. Witness of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, Alleluia.

Lectio VI.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Ignem sui amóris * accéndat Deus in córdibus nostris.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the Spirit’s fire Divine * in our hearts enkindled shine.

De expositióne sancti Gregórii Papæ super Ezechiélem Prophétam.

From the Exposition of the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel by Pope St. Gregory.

Hom. 3. lib. 1.

℟. Deo grátias.

The Prophet writeth very minutely touching the four holy living creatures, whom he saw in the spirit as being to come. He saith: "Every one had four faces, and every one had four wings." What signifieth the face save likeness whereby we are known? or wings, save the power to fly since it is by the face that man is known from man, and by their wings that the birds' bodies are carried up into the air. So the face pertaineth to certitude, and the wings to contemplation. With certitude we are known of God Almighty, Who saith: "I am the Good Shepherd, and know My sheep, and am known of Mine." (John x. 14.) And again: "I know whom I have chosen." (xiii. 18.) And by contemplation, whereby we rise above ourselves, we as it were fly heavenwards.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VI.

℟. Repléti sunt claritáte, allelúja, allelúja.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
℟. Repléti sunt claritáte, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. These are the new lambs, who have proclaimed, Alleluia: they came but just now to the well: * They are all filled with light, Alleluia, alleluia.
℣. They stand before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.
℟. They are all filled with light, Alleluia, alleluia.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. They are all filled with light, Alleluia, alleluia.

Nocturnus III.

Lux perpétua * lucébit sanctis tuis Dómine, et ætérnitas témporum, allelúja.

The everlasting light * shall shine upon Thy Saints, O Lord, even unto everlasting, Alleluia.

Psalmus 74.

5 Nolíte extóllere in altum cornu vestrum: * nolíte loqui advérsus Deum iniquitátem.
Amen.

We will praise thee, O God: * we will praise, and we will call upon thy name.
2 We will relate thy wondrous works: * When I shall take a time, I will judge justices.
3 The earth is melted, and all that dwell therein: * I have established the pillars thereof.
4 I said to the wicked: Do not act wickedly: * and to the sinners: Lift not up the horn.
5 Lift not up your horn on high: * speak not iniquity against God.
6 For neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the desert hills: * For God is the judge.
7 One he putteth down, and another he lifteth up: * For in the hand of the Lord there is a cup of strong wine full of mixture.
8 And he hath poured it out from this to that: but the dregs thereof are not emptied: * all the sinners of the earth shall drink.
9 But I will declare for ever: * I will sing to the God of Jacob.
10 And I will break all the horns of sinners: * but the horns of the just shall be exalted.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 96.

Dóminus regnávit, exsúltet terra: * læténtur ínsulæ multæ.
2 Nubes, et calígo in circúitu ejus: * justítia, et judícium corréctio sedis ejus.
3 Ignis ante ipsum præcédet, * et inflammábit in circúitu inimícos ejus.
5 Montes, sicut cera fluxérunt a fácie Dómini: * a fácie Dómini omnis terra.
13 Lætámini justi in Dómino: * et confitémini memóriæ sanctificatiónis ejus.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

The Lord hath reigned, let the earth rejoice: * let many islands be glad.
2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: * justice and judgment are the establishment of his throne.
3 A fire shall go before him, * and shall burn his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings have shone forth to the world: * the earth saw and trembled.
5 The mountains melted like wax, at the presence of the Lord: * at the presence of the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens declared his justice: * and all people saw his glory.
7 Let them be all confounded that adore graven things, * and that glory in their idols.
8 Adore him, all you his angels: * Sion heard, and was glad.
9 And the daughters of Juda rejoiced, * because of thy judgments, O Lord.
10 For thou art the most high Lord over all the earth: * thou art exalted exceedingly above all gods.
11 You that love the Lord, hate evil: * the Lord preserveth the souls of his saints, he will deliver them out of the hand of the sinner.
12 Light is risen to the just, * and joy to the right of heart.
13 Rejoice, ye just, in the Lord: * and give praise to the remembrance of his holiness.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Psalmus 98.

Dóminus regnávit, irascántur pópuli: * qui sedet super Chérubim, moveátur terra.
2 Dóminus in Sion magnus: * et excélsus super omnes pópulos.
4 Tu parásti directiónes: * judícium et justítiam in Jacob tu fecísti.
Amen.

The Lord hath reigned, let the people be angry: * he that sitteth on the cherubims: let the earth be moved.
2 The Lord is great in Sion, * and high above all people.
3 Let them give praise to thy great name: for it is terrible and holy: * And the king's honour loveth judgment.
4 Thou hast prepared directions: * thou hast done judgment and justice in Jacob.
5 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and adore his footstool, * for it is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron among his priests: * and Samuel among them that call upon his name.
7 They called upon the Lord, and he heard them: * He spoke to them in the pillar of the cloud.
8 They kept his testimonies, * and the commandment which he gave them.
9 Thou didst hear them, O Lord our God: * thou wast a merciful God to them, and taking vengeance on all their inventions.
10 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and adore at his holy mountain: * for the Lord our God is holy.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

A Lesson from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Luc. 10.

In illo témpore: Designávit Dóminus et álios septuagínta duos: et misit illos binos ante fáciem suam, in omnem civitátem et locum, quo erat ipse ventúrus. Et réliqua.

At that time: The Lord appointed other seventy-two also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come. And so on.

Homilía sancti Gregórii Papæ.

Homily by Pope St. Gregory.

Homilia 17. in Evangelia.

℟. Deo grátias.

Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us: for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two: since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour: and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VII.

℟. Ego sum vitis vera, et vos pálmites: * Qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, allelúja, allelúja.
℣. Sicut diléxit me Pater, et ego diléxi vos.
℟. Qui manet in me, et ego in eo, hic fert fructum multum, allelúja, allelúja.

℟. I am the true vine, ye are the branches. * He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, Alleluia, alleluia.
℣. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you.
℟. He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, Alleluia, alleluia.

Lectio VIII.

℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
He whose feast-day we are keeping, * be our Advocate with God.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

Behold, the Lord sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two: and thus doing, He doth silently teach us that whoseover loveth not his neighbour, such an one it behooveth not to take upon him the office of a preacher. Well also is it said that He sent them before His face into every city and place whither He Himself would come. The Lord followeth His preachers: first cometh preaching, and then the Lord Himself cometh to the house of our mind, whither the word of exhortation hath come before: and so cometh the truth into our mind. Therefore to preachers saith Isaiah: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight an highway for our God. And again the Psalmist saith: Spread a path before Him That rideth upon the West. The Lord rideth upon the West; above that from which in death He veiled His glory hath He royally exalted that glory that excelleth, even the glory of His rising again. He rideth upon the West, Who, being risen again from the dead, is throned high above the death to which He bowed. Before Him, therefore, That rideth upon the West, we spread a path, when we set forth His glory before the eyes of your mind, to the end that He Himself may come after, and Himself enlighten the same your minds by His presence and His love.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem.

A Lesson from the Holy Gospel according to John.

Joann. 16.

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Vado ad eum qui misit me; et nemo ex vobis intérrogat me, Quo vadis? Et réliqua.

At that time, Jesus said unto His disciples: I go My way to Him That sent Me, and none of you asketh Me: Whither goest Thou? And so on.

Homilía sancti Augustíni Epíscopi.

Homily by St. Austin, Bishop.

Tractatus 94. in Joannem, initio.

℟. Deo grátias.

The Lord Jesus told His disciples what things they should suffer after that He was gone away from them, and then He said: "These things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you; but now I go My way to Him That sent Me." Let us first see whether it had been that He had not told them before this what they were to suffer in time coming. That He had done so amply before the night of the last Supper, is testified by the three first Evangelists, but it was when that Supper was ended that, according to John, He said: "These things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you." Are we then to try and loose the knot of this difficulty by asserting that, according to these three Evangelists, it was on the eve of the Passion, albeit before the Supper, that He had said these things unto them, and therefore not at the beginning, when He was with them, but when He was about to leave them, and go His way to the Father And in this way we might reconcile the truthfulness of what this Evangelist saith here "These things I said not unto you at the beginning" with the truthfulness of the! other three. But this explanation is rendered impossible by the Gospel according to Matthew, who telleth us how that the Lord spake to His Apostles concerning their sufferings to come, not only when He was on the point of eating the Passover with them, but at the very beginning, when the names of the twelve are first given, and they were sent forth to do the work of God. (Matth. x. 17-42.) It would seem then that when He said: "These things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you," He meant by "these things," not the sufferings which they were to bear for His sake, but His promise of the Comforter Who should come to them, and testify while they suffered, (xv. 26, 27.) This Comforter then, or Advocate, (for the Greek word "Parakletos" will bear either interpretation,) would be needful to them when they saw Christ no more, and therefore it was that Christ spoke not of Him "at the beginning" (of the Gospel Dispensation) while He Himself "was with" His disciples, because His visible Presence was then their sufficient comfort.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

O God, my God, * to thee do I watch at break of day.
2 For thee my soul hath thirsted; * for thee my flesh, O how many ways!
3 In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: * so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory.
4 For thy mercy is better than lives: * thee my lips shall praise.
5 Thus will I bless thee all my life long: * and in thy name I will lift up my hands.
6 Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: * and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips.
7 If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning: * because thou hast been my helper.
8 And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings: my soul hath stuck close to thee: * thy right hand hath received me.
9 But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: * they shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes.
10 But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: * because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things.

1 May God have mercy on us, and bless us: * may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.
2 That we may know thy way upon earth: * thy salvation in all nations.
3 Let people confess to thee, O God: * let all people give praise to thee.
4 Let the nations be glad and rejoice: * for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth.
5 Let the people, O God, confess to thee: let all the people give praise to thee: * the earth hath yielded her fruit.
6 May God, our God bless us, may God bless us: * and all the ends of the earth fear him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

5 For he spoke, and they were made: * he commanded, and they were created.
6 He hath established them for ever, and for ages of ages: * he hath made a decree, and it shall not pass away.
7 Praise the Lord from the earth, * ye dragons, and all ye deeps:
8 Fire, hail, snow, ice, stormy winds * which fulfill his word:
9 Mountains and all hills, * fruitful trees and all cedars:
10 Beasts and all cattle: * serpents and feathered fowls:
11 Kings of the earth and all people: * princes and all judges of the earth:
12 Young men and maidens: let the old with the younger, praise the name of the Lord: * for his name alone is exalted.
13 The praise of him is above heaven and earth: * and he hath exalted the horn of his people.
14 A hymn to all his saints: * to the children of Israel, a people approaching to him.

1 Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle: * let his praise be in the church of the saints.
2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: * and let the children of Sion be joyful in their king.
3 Let them praise his name in choir: * let them sing to him with the timbrel and the psaltery.
4 For the Lord is well pleased with his people: * and he will exalt the meek unto salvation.
5 The saints shall rejoice in glory: * they shall be joyful in their beds.
6 The high praises of God shall be in their mouth: * and two-edged swords in their hands:
7 To execute vengeance upon the nations, * chastisements among the people:
8 To bind their kings with fetters, * and their nobles with manacles of iron.
9 To execute upon them the judgment that is written: * this glory is to all his saints.

1 Praise ye the Lord in his holy places: * praise ye him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise ye him for his mighty acts: * praise ye him according to the multitude of his greatness.
3 Praise him with sound of trumpet: * praise him with psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with timbrel and choir: * praise him with strings and organs.
5 Praise him on high sounding cymbals: praise him on cymbals of joy: * let every spirit praise the Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Benedictus.

Amen.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, * for He hath visited and redeemed His people.
2 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, * in the house of His servant David:
3 As He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began:
4 That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
5 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, * and to remember His holy covenant:
6 The oath which He sware to our father Abraham, * that He would grant unto us,
7 That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, * might serve Him without fear,
8 In holiness and righteousness before Him * all the days of our life.
9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways:
10 To give knowledge of salvation unto His people, * by the remission of their sins;
11 Through the tender mercy of our God, * whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
12 To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Qui es in cœlis, sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris:
℣. Et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem.
℟. Sed líbera nos a malo.

Our Father.
Who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us:
℣. And lead us not into temptation.
℟. But deliver us from evil.

Psalmus 69.

Deus in adjutórium meum inténde: * Dómine ad adjuvándum me festína.
6 Ego vero egénus, et pauper sum: * Deus ádjuva me.
Amen.

℣. Dómine exaúdi oratiónem meam.
℟. Et clamor meus ad te véniat.

O God, come to my assistance; * O Lord, make haste to help me.
2 Let them be confounded and ashamed * that seek my soul:
3 Let them be turned backward, and blush for shame * that desire evils to me:
4 Let them be presently turned away blushing for shame * that say to me: Tis well, tis well.
5 Let all that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; * and let such as love thy salvation say always: The Lord be magnified.
