Die 27 Septembris 2027.

Ss. Cosmæ et Damiani Martyrum.

Semiduplex.

Amen.
Dómine in unióne illíus divínæ intentiónis, qua ipse in terris laudes Deo persolvísti, has tibi Horas persólvo.

O Lord, open Thou my mouth that I may bless Thy Holy Name. Cleanse my heart from all vain, evil, and wandering thoughts; enlighten my understanding; kindle my affections, that I may pray to, and praise Thee with attention and devotion; and may worthily be heard before the presence of Thy Divine Majesty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Lord, in union with that Divine Intention wherewith Thou didst Thyself praise God, while as Thou wast on earth, I offer these Hours unto Thee.

Ad Matutinum.

Dicuntur secreto.

Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificétur nomen tuum: advéniat regnum tuum: fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidiánum da nobis hódie: et dimítte nobis débita nostra, sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris: et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem: sed líbera nos a malo. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven: hallowed be thy name: thy kingdom come: thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Ave María, grátia plena, Dóminus tecum: benedícta tu in muliéribus, et benedíctus fructus ventris tui Jesus. Sancta María, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatóribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostræ. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Credo in Spíritum sanctum, sanctam Ecclésiam cathólicam, sanctórum communiónem, remissiónem peccatórum, carnis resurrectiónem, vitam ætérnam. Amen.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried: He descended into hell: the third day He rose again from the dead: He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body. And the Life everlasting. Amen.

Deinde clara voce:

℣. Dómine, †︎ lábia mea apéries.
℟. Et os meum annuntiábit laudem tuam.

℣. O Lord, open Thou my lips.
℟. And my mouth shall show forth Thy praise.

℣. Deus ✠ in adjutórium meum inténde.
℟. Dómine ad adjuvándum me festína.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen. Allelúja.

℣. Make haste, ✠ O God, to deliver me.
℟. Make haste to help me, O Lord.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia.

Invitatorium.

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Psalmus 94.

Veníte, exsultémus Dómino, jubilémus Deo salutári nostro: præoccupémus fáciem ejus in confessióne, et in psalmis jubilémus ei.

O come, let us sing unto the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the God of our Salvation: let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Quóniam Deus magnus Dóminus, et Rex magnus super omnes deos: quóniam non repéllet Dóminus plebem suam, quia in manu ejus sunt omnes fines terræ, et altitúdines móntium ipse cónspicit.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods: for the Lord will not cast off His people: for in His hand are all the ends of the earth; and the heights of the hills are His also.

Veníte, adorémus.

O come, let us worship Him!

For the sea is His, and He made it: and His hands formed the dry land: O come, let us worship and fall down; let us cry unto the Lord our Maker. For He is the Lord our God; and we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Hódie si vocem ejus audiéritis, nolíte obduráre corda vestra, sicut in exacerbatióne secúndum diem tentatiónis in desérto: ubi tentavérunt me patres vestri, probavérunt et vidérunt ópera mea.

To-day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your heart; as in in the Provocation, and as in the day of Temptation in the wilderness: when your fathers tempted Me, proved Me, and saw My works.

Veníte, adorémus.

O come, let us worship Him!

Quadragínta annis próximus fui generatióni huic, et dixi, Semper hi errant corde: ipsi vero non cognovérunt vias meas, quibus jurávi in ira mea, si introíbunt in réquiem meam.

Forty years long was I grieved with that generation and said, It is a people that do alway err in their heart, and they have not known My ways: unto whom I sware in My wrath that they should not enter into My rest.

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto. Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Veníte, adorémus.

O come, let us worship Him!

Regem Mártyrum Dóminum, * Veníte, adorémus.

The Lord He is the King of the Martyrs. * O come, let us worship Him!

Hymnus.

Christo profúsum sánguinem,
Et Mártyrum victórias,
Dignámque cœlo laúream
Lætis sequámur vócibus.

Terróre victo sǽculi,
Pœnísque spretis córporis,
Mortis sacræ compéndio
Vitam beátam póssident.

Tradúntur igni Mártyres,
Et bestiárum déntibus:
Armáta sævit úngulis
Tortóris insáni manus.

Nudáta pendent víscera,
Sanguis sacrátus fúnditur:
Sed pérmanent immóbiles
Vitæ perénnis grátia.

Te nunc Redémptor quǽsumus,
Ut Mártyrum consórtio
Jungas precántes sérvulos
In sempitérna sǽcula.

Nocturnus I.

Secus decúrsus aquárum.

By the rivers of water.

Psalmus 1.

Amen.

Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, * nor sat in the chair of pestilence.
2 But his will is in the law of the Lord, * and on his law he shall meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, * which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season.
4 And his leaf shall not fall off: * and all whatsoever he shall do shall prosper.
5 Not so the wicked, not so: * but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.
6 Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: * nor sinners in the council of the just.
7 For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: * and the way of the wicked shall perish.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Secus decúrsus aquárum plantávit víneam justórum, et in lege Dómini fuit volúntas eórum.

By the rivers of water hath the Lord planted the vineyard of the righteous, and in His Law do they meditate day and night.

Tamquam aurum.

As gold.

Psalmus 2.

3 Dirumpámus víncula eórum: * et projiciámus a nobis jugum ipsórum.
4 Qui hábitat in cœlis, irridébit eos: * et Dóminus subsannábit eos.
7 Dóminus dixit ad me: * Fílius meus es tu, ego hódie génui te.
8 Póstula a me, et dabo tibi Gentes hæreditátem tuam, * et possessiónem tuam términos terræ.
9 Reges eos in virga férrea, * et tamquam vas fíguli confrínges eos.
11 Servíte Dómino in timóre: * et exsultáte ei cum tremóre.
Amen.

Why have the Gentiles raged, * and the people devised vain things?
2 The kings of the earth stood up, and the princes met together, * against the Lord and against his Christ.
3 Let us break their bonds asunder: * and let us cast away their yoke from us.
4 He that dwelleth in heaven shall laugh at them: * and the Lord shall deride them.
5 Then shall he speak to them in his anger, * and trouble them in his rage.
6 But I am appointed king by him over Sion his holy mountain, * preaching his commandment.
7 The Lord hath said to me: * Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.
8 Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, * and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession.
9 Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron, * and shalt break them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
10 And now, O ye kings, understand: * receive instruction, you that judge the earth.
11 Serve ye the Lord with fear: * and rejoice unto him with trembling.
12 Embrace discipline, lest at any time the Lord be angry, * and you perish from the just way.
13 When his wrath shall be kindled in a short time, * blessed are all they that trust in him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Tamquam aurum in fornáce probávit eléctos Dóminus: et quasi holocaústa accépit eos in ætérnum.

As gold in the furnace, hath the Lord tried His chosen ones, and received them for ever as a holocaust.

Si coram homínibus.

Though in the sight of men,

Psalmus 3.

Dómine quid multiplicáti sunt qui tríbulant me? * multi insúrgunt advérsum me.
6 Non timébo míllia pópuli circumdántis me: * exsúrge Dómine salvum me fac, Deus meus.
Amen.

Why, O Lord, are they multiplied that afflict me? * Many are they who rise up against me.
2 Many say to my soul: * There is no salvation for him in his God.
3 But thou, O Lord art my protector, * my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
4 I have cried to the Lord with my voice: * and he hath heard me from his holy hill.
5 I have slept and taken my rest: * and I have risen up, because the Lord hath protected me.
6 I will not fear thousands of the people, surrounding me: * arise, O Lord; save me, O my God.
7 For thou hast struck all them who are my adversaries without cause: * thou hast broken the teeth of sinners.
8 Salvation is of the Lord: * and thy blessing is upon thy people.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Though in the sight of men, the elect be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality.

De libro Esther.

Esth. 2.

Erat vir Judǽus in Susan civitáte, vocábulo Mardochǽus fílius Jaïr, fílii Sémei, fílii Cis, de stirpe Jémini, qui translátus fúerat de Jerúsalem eo témpore, quo Jechoníam regem Juda Nabuchodónosor rex Babylónis transtúlerat, qui fuit nutrítius fíliæ fratris sui Edíssæ, quæ áltero nómine vocabátur Esther: et utrúmque paréntem amíserat: pulchra nimis, et decóra fácie. Mortuísque patre ejus ac matre, Mardochǽus sibi eam adoptávit in fíliam.
Tu autem Dómine miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium I.

℟. Quóniam prióra transiérunt.

℟. God shall wipe away all tears from the eyes of His Saints, and there shall be no more sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; * for the former things are passed away.
℣. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more, neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
℟. For the former things are passed away.

Lectio II.

Unigénitus Dei Fílius * nos benedícere et adjuváre dignétur.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the Son, the Sole-begotten, * mercifully bless and keep us.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium II.

℟. Viri sancti gloriósum sánguinem fudérunt pro Dómino, amavérunt Christum in vita sua, imitáti sunt eum in morte sua: * Et ídeo corónas triumpháles meruérunt.
℣. Unus spíritus, et una fides erat in eis.
℟. Et ídeo corónas triumpháles meruérunt.

℟. These men are holy, who have gloriously shed their blood for the Lord's sake, yea, who loved Christ in their lives, and were made like unto Him in their flesh, * and therefore they have earned crowns of victory.
℣. One spirit, and one faith was in them.
℟. And therefore they have earned crowns of victory.

Lectio III.

Jube, domne, benedícere.
Spíritus sancti grátia * illúminet sensus et corda nostra.
℟. Amen.

Sir, be pleased to give the blessing.
May the grace of God the Spirit * all our heart and mind enlighten.
Amen.

℟. Deo grátias.

But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium III.

℟. Et meruérunt habére corónas perpétuas.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
℟. Et meruérunt habére corónas perpétuas.

℟. They gave their bodiees for God's sake to death; * and gained the everlasting crown.
℣. These are they which came out of that great tribulation, and have washed their robes in the Blood of the Lamb.
℟. And gained the everlasting crown.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. And gained the everlasting crown.

Nocturnus II.

Dabo sanctis meis.

I will give unto My Saints.

Psalmus 14.

Dómine quis habitábit in tabernáculo tuo?
Amen.

Lord, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? * or who shall rest in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh without blemish, * and worketh justice:
3 He that speaketh truth in his heart, * who hath not used deceit in his tongue:
4 Nor hath done evil to his neighbour: * nor taken up a reproach against his neighbours.
5 In his sight the malignant is brought to nothing: * but he glorifieth them that fear the Lord.
6 He that sweareth to his neighbour, and deceiveth not; * He that hath not put out his money to usury, nor taken bribes against the innocent:
7 He that doth these things * shall not be moved for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Dabo sanctis meis locum nominátum in regno Patris mei, dicit Dóminus.

I will give unto My Saints a place in the kingdom of My Father, every one by his own name, saith the Lord.

Sanctis, qui in terra sunt ejus,

To the Saints that are in the earth.

Psalmus 15.

Consérva me Dómine, quóniam sperávi in te.
8 Providébam Dóminum in conspéctu meo semper: * quóniam a dextris est mihi, ne commóvear.
11 Notas mihi fecísti vias vitæ, adimplébis me lætítia cum vultu tuo: * delectatiónes in déxtera tua usque in finem.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Preserve me, O Lord, for I have put my trust in thee. * I have said to the Lord, thou art my God, for thou hast no need of my goods.
2 To the saints, who are in his land, * he hath made wonderful all my desires in them.
3 Their infirmities were multiplied: * afterwards they made haste.
4 I will not gather together their meetings for blood offerings: * nor will I be mindful of their names by my lips.
5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: * it is thou that wilt restore my inheritance to me.
6 The lines are fallen unto me in goodly places: * for my inheritance is goodly to me.
7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me understanding: * moreover my reins also have corrected me even till night.
8 I set the Lord always in my sight: * for he is at my right hand, that I be not moved.
9 Therefore my heart hath been glad, and my tongue hath rejoiced: * moreover my flesh also shall rest in hope.
10 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; * nor wilt thou give thy holy one to see corruption.
11 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life, thou shalt fill me with joy with thy countenance: * at thy right hand are delights even to the end.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

To the Saints that are in the earth Thou hast made all my counsels admirable.

Sancti qui sperant in Dómino,

The Saints that wait upon the Lord.

Psalmus 23.

3 Quis ascéndet in montem Dómini?
5 Hic accípiet benedictiónem a Dómino: * et misericórdiam a Deo salutári suo.
6 Hæc est generátio quæréntium eum, * quæréntium fáciem Dei Jacob.
7 Attóllite portas príncipes vestras, † et elevámini portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
8 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? † Dóminus fortis et potens: * Dóminus potens in prǽlio.
9 Attóllite portas príncipes vestras, † et elevámini portæ æternáles: * et introíbit Rex glóriæ.
10 Quis est iste Rex glóriæ? * Dóminus virtútum ipse est Rex glóriæ.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof: * the world, and all they that dwell therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the seas; * and hath prepared it upon the rivers.
3 Who shall ascend into the mountain of the Lord: * or who shall stand in his holy place?
4 The innocent in hands, and clean of heart, † who hath not taken his soul in vain, * nor sworn deceitfully to his neighbour.
5 He shall receive a blessing from the Lord, * and mercy from God his Saviour.
6 This is the generation of them that seek him, * of them that seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.
8 Who is this King of Glory? † the Lord who is strong and mighty: * the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your gates, O ye princes, † and be ye lifted up, O eternal gates: * and the King of Glory shall enter in.
10 Who is this King of Glory? * the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

The Saints that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall fly and not faint.

Itaque in Jesu Christi confessióne martýrii palmam accepérunt.
Tu autem Dómine miserére nobis.
℟. Deo grátias.

But we, who would fain rejoice with the Saints, would fain not share with them the persecution of the world. Whosoever will not take ensample of the holy Martyrs, as far as lieth in him, such an one cannot attain unto their blessedness. Thus preacheth the Apostle Paul, when he saith: As ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation. Yea, the Lord Himself saith in the Gospel: If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you. he will not be of the body, who will not be hated with the Head.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

℟. The Saints of God shrank not from the stripes of the executioners, but died for Christ's Name's sake; * that they might be made joint-heirs in the house of the Lord.
℣. They gave their bodies for God's sake to death.
℟. That they might be made joint-heirs in the house of the Lord.

℟. For the grace of God, and His peace, are with His chosen.

Nocturnus III.

Justi autem.

The righteous.

Psalmus 32.

Exsultáte justi in Dómino: * rectos decet collaudátio.
2 Confitémini Dómino in cíthara: * in psaltério decem chordárum psállite illi.
3 Cantáte ei cánticum novum: * bene psállite ei in vociferatióne.
7 Cóngregans sicut in utre aquas maris: * ponens in thesaúris abýssos.
21 Quia in eo lætábitur cor nostrum: * et in nómine sancto ejus sperávimus.
22 Fiat misericórdia tua Dómine super nos: * quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just: * praise becometh the upright.
2 Give praise to the Lord on the harp; * sing to him with the psaltery, the instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing to him a new canticle, * sing well unto him with a loud noise.
4 For the word of the Lord is right, * and all his works are done with faithfulness.
5 He loveth mercy and judgment; * the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were established; * and all the power of them by the spirit of his mouth:
7 Gathering together the waters of the sea, as in a vessel; * laying up the depths in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord, * and let all the inhabitants of the world be in awe of him.
9 For he spoke and they were made: * he commanded and they were created.
10 The Lord bringeth to naught the counsels of nations; * and he rejecteth the devices of people, and casteth away the counsels of princes.
11 But the counsel of the Lord standeth for ever: * the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: * the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance.
13 The Lord hath looked from heaven: * he hath beheld all the sons of men.
14 From his habitation which he hath prepared, * he hath looked upon all that dwell on the earth.
15 He who hath made the hearts of every one of them: * who understandeth all their works.
16 The king is not saved by a great army: * nor shall the giant be saved by his own great strength.
17 Vain is the horse for safety: * neither shall he be saved by the abundance of his strength.
18 Behold the eyes of the Lord are on them that fear him: * and on them that hope in his mercy.
19 To deliver their souls from death; * and feed them in famine.
20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: * for he is our helper and protector.
21 For in him our heart shall rejoice: * and in his holy name we have trusted.
22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, * as we have hoped in thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

The righteous live for evermore; their reward also is with the Lord.

Tradidérunt.

They gave up.

Psalmus 33.

Benedícam Dóminum in omni témpore: * semper laus ejus in ore meo.
7 Immíttet Angelus Dómini in circúitu timéntium eum: * et erípiet eos.
11 Veníte fílii audíte me: * timórem Dómini docébo vos.
Amen.

I will bless the Lord at all times, * his praise shall be always in my mouth.
2 In the Lord shall my soul be praised: * let the meek hear and rejoice.
3 O magnify the Lord with me; * and let us extol his name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me; * and he delivered me from all my troubles.
5 Come ye to him and be enlightened: * and your faces shall not be confounded.
6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him: * and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord shall encamp round about them that fear him: * and shall deliver them.
8 O taste, and see that the Lord is sweet: * blessed is the man that hopeth in him.
9 Fear the Lord, all ye his saints: * for there is no want to them that fear him.
10 The rich have wanted, and have suffered hunger: * but they that seek the Lord shall not be deprived of any good.
11 Come, children, hearken to me: * I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 Who is the man that desireth life: * who loveth to see good days?
13 Keep thy tongue from evil, * and thy lips from speaking guile.
14 Turn away from evil and do good: * seek after peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the just: * and his ears unto their prayers.
16 But the countenance of the Lord is against them that do evil things: * to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
17 The just cried, and the Lord heard them: * and delivered them out of all their troubles.
18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a contrite heart: * and he will save the humble of spirit.
19 Many are the afflictions of the just; * but out of them all will the Lord deliver them.
20 The Lord keepeth all their bones, * not one of them shall be broken.
21 The death of the wicked is very evil: * and they that hate the just shall be guilty.
22 The Lord will redeem the souls of his servants: * and none of them that trust in him shall offend.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Tradidérunt córpora sua in mortem, ne servírent idólis: ídeo coronáti póssident palmam.

They gave up their bodies unto death rather than serve idols: and therefore have they crowns on their heads and palms in their hands.

Ecce merces.

Behold their reward,

Psalmus 45.

Amen.

Our God is our refuge and strength: * a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.
2 Therefore we will not fear, when the earth shall be troubled; * and the mountains shall be removed into the heart of the sea.
3 Their waters roared and were troubled: * the mountains were troubled with his strength.
4 The stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful: * the most High hath sanctified his own tabernacle.
5 God is in the midst thereof, it shall not be moved: * God will help it in the morning early.
6 Nations were troubled, and kingdoms were bowed down: * he uttered his voice, the earth trembled.
7 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
8 Come and behold ye the works of the Lord: what wonders he hath done upon earth, * Making wars to cease even to the end of the earth.
9 He shall destroy the bow, and break the weapons: * and the shield he shall burn in the fire.
10 Be still and see that I am God; * I will be exalted among the nations, and I will be exalted in the earth.
11 The Lord of armies is with us: * the God of Jacob is our protector.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Léctio sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

A Lesson from the Holy Gospel according to Luke.

Luc. 6. c.

At that time: Jesus came down from the mountain, and stood in the plain, and the company of His disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judea, and Jerusalem, and from the sea cost of Tyre and Sidon. And so on.

Homilía sancti Ambrósii Epíscopi.

Homily by St. Ambrose, Bishop.

Lib. 5. in Lucam. Cap . 6., post init.

℟. Deo grátias.

Mark well how Jesus goeth upward with His disciples, and downward to the multitude. How should the multitude behold Christ, save in a lower place? Such go not up to the things which are above; such attain not to the things which are high. And when Jesus cometh down, He findeth such as are diseased: for such like go not up to the heights. Hence also Matthew saith that there were there all sick people. Of these every man had need of healing, that, when he had received strenght, by and by, he might go up into the mountain. And therefore, being Himself come down, He healeth them in the plain, that is to say, He calleth them away from their lust, and freeth them of their blindness. He cometh down to our wounds, to the end that by a certain use of His nature, and by the abundance thereof, He might make us joint-heirs of the kingdom of heaven.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VII.

℟. Propter testaméntum Dómini, et leges patérnas, sancti Dei persistérunt in amóre fraternitátis: * Quia unus fuit semper spíritus in eis, et una fides.
℟. Quia unus fuit semper spíritus in eis, et una fides.

℟. Because of the covenant of the Lord, and the laws of their fathers, the Saints of God abode in brotherly love, * for one spirit and one faith was ever in them.
℣. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
℟. For one spirit and one faith was ever in them.

℟. Deo grátias.

Blessed be ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Saint Luke giveth us but four of the Lord’s Beatitudes, and Saint Matthew eight: but in those eight are contained these four, and in these four those eight. For in these four are embraced the cardinal virtues: and in those eight they are set forth in a number full of mystery. It is written at the head of more than one of the Psalms that they are for the octave, and thou hast received the commandment: Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; to seven or eight what? Perchance degrees of blessedness. For as this eighth doth name the most glorious realization of our hope: the kingdom of Heaven: so doth it also name the most royal exertion of our strength: blessed are they which are persecuted.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Responsorium VIII.

℟. Contemnéntes aulam régiam, pervenérunt ad regna cœléstia.
℣. Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui sancto.
℟. Contemnéntes aulam régiam, pervenérunt ad regna cœléstia.

℟. Theirs is a brotherhood indeed, whose tie no storms availed to sever: together they followed the Lord in the shedding of their blood. * Together they set at nought the Royal Palace; together they attained unto the kingdom of heaven.
℣. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.
℟. Together they set at nought the Royal Palace; together they attained unto the kingdom of heaven.
℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
℟. Together they set at nought the Royal Palace; together they attained unto the kingdom of heaven.

℟. Deo grátias.

But let us first consider the fuller of the forms of these Beatitudes. Blessed be ye poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Both of the Evangelists give to this Beatitude the first place. Yea, surely, for poorness, at least in spirit, is the first in order, the mother, and procreatrix of virtues; since he that setteth no store by temporal things, winneth toward eternal things; neither is any man able to gain the kingdom of heaven, on whom the love of this present world doth so press, that he cannot rid himself thereof.
But Thou, O Lord, have mercy on us.
℟. Thanks be to God.

Psalmus 62.

8 Et in velaménto alárum tuárum exsultábo, adhǽsit ánima mea post te: * me suscépit déxtera tua.
9 Ipsi vero in vanum quæsiérunt ánimam meam, introíbunt in inferióra terræ: * tradéntur in manus gládii, partes vúlpium erunt.
10 Rex vero lætábitur in Deo, laudabúntur omnes qui jurant in eo: * quia obstrúctum est os loquéntium iníqua.
Psalmus 66.
1 Deus misereátur nostri, et benedícat nobis: * illúminet vultum suum super nos, et misereátur nostri.
2 Ut cognoscámus in terra viam tuam: * in ómnibus Géntibus salutáre tuum.
3 Confiteántur tibi pópuli Deus: * confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes.
4 Læténtur et exsúltent Gentes: * quóniam júdicas pópulos in æquitáte, et Gentes in terra dírigis.
5 Confiteántur tibi pópuli Deus, confiteántur tibi pópuli omnes: * terra dedit fructum suum.
6 Benedícat nos Deus, Deus noster, benedícat nos Deus: * et métuant eum omnes fines terræ.
Glória Patri, et Fílio, * et Spirítui sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper: * et in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

O God, my God, * to thee do I watch at break of day.
2 For thee my soul hath thirsted; * for thee my flesh, O how many ways!
3 In a desert land, and where there is no way, and no water: * so in the sanctuary have I come before thee, to see thy power and thy glory.
4 For thy mercy is better than lives: * thee my lips shall praise.
5 Thus will I bless thee all my life long: * and in thy name I will lift up my hands.
6 Let my soul be filled as with marrow and fatness: * and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips.
7 If I have remembered thee upon my bed, I will meditate on thee in the morning: * because thou hast been my helper.
8 And I will rejoice under the covert of thy wings: my soul hath stuck close to thee: * thy right hand hath received me.
9 But they have sought my soul in vain, they shall go into the lower parts of the earth: * they shall be delivered into the hands of the sword, they shall be the portions of foxes.
10 But the king shall rejoice in God, all they shall be praised that swear by him: * because the mouth is stopped of them that speak wicked things.

1 May God have mercy on us, and bless us: * may he cause the light of his countenance to shine upon us, and may he have mercy on us.
2 That we may know thy way upon earth: * thy salvation in all nations.
3 Let people confess to thee, O God: * let all people give praise to thee.
4 Let the nations be glad and rejoice: * for thou judgest the people with justice, and directest the nations upon earth.
5 Let the people, O God, confess to thee: let all the people give praise to thee: * the earth hath yielded her fruit.
6 May God, our God bless us, may God bless us: * and all the ends of the earth fear him.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, * for He hath visited and redeemed His people.
2 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, * in the house of His servant David:
3 As He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, * which have been since the world began:
4 That we should be saved from our enemies, * and from the hand of all that hate us:
5 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, * and to remember His holy covenant:
6 The oath which He sware to our father Abraham, * that He would grant unto us,
7 That we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, * might serve Him without fear,
8 In holiness and righteousness before Him * all the days of our life.
9 And thou, child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: * for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways:
10 To give knowledge of salvation unto His people, * by the remission of their sins;
11 Through the tender mercy of our God, * whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
12 To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, * to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, * and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: * world without end. Amen.

O Holy Mary, * be thou an help to the helpless, a strength to the fearful, a comfort to the sorrowful; pray for the people, plead for the clergy, make intercession for all women vowed to God; may all that are keeping this thine holy commemoration feel the might of thine assistance.

De Apostolis.

O God, Whose Right Hand caught the Blessed Peter when he walked upon the water, and began to sink, and thrice delivered his fellow-Apostle Paul from the deep of the sea, when he suffered shipwreck; † graciously hear us, and grant, * for the sake of them both, that we also may attain unto everlasting glory.

Hail, O Queen, Mother of mercy! hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, the banished sons of Eve. Toward thee we sigh, weeping and groaning in this vale of tears. Ah, then, thou our Advocate, turn on us those merciful eyes of thine! And, after this our exile, show to us Jesus, the blessed Fruit of thy womb. O most merciful, O most gracious, O most sweet Virgin Mary!

Per eúmdem Christum Dóminum nostrum.

O almighty God, Who, by the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, didst make ready both the body and soul of the glorious Virgin and Mother Mary worthily to become a meet dwelling for Thy Son; † grant that as we rejoice in her memory, * so by her pitiful intercession we may be delivered from the evils that continually hang over us, and finally from everlasting death.
